Pony Racing Results Three Counties Area 9 Friday 14th April 2017

We were blessed with good weather again this year, although a little cooler than the preceding days. Something I’m sure the ponies appreciated. A bumper entry meant we divided 3 races, one 3 ways. This meant we were in for an 11 race marathon. A huge thank you must go to all of our able helpers who managed to keep to time. A little tumble on the way to the start meant one race was 8 minutes late starting but this didn’t have any knock on effect.

We kicked off with the 128cm open this race has a new sponsor this year in the shape of top local trainer Kim Bailey. With 23 entries we had two divisions of this race. These were won by children from opposite ends of the experience scale. The first by Megan Risdale riding in only her second race (although she also won her first at Ascot too) the second by Ted Featherstone this being his 11th winner, his pony ‘Silaz’ is something of a legend having now won 4 times at Cheltenham. Silaz also hunts and does dressage, the latter Ted is not so keen on!! These were the first lucky Jockeys of the day to visit the Charlie Longsdon sponsored winners enclosure.

The 138cm Novice stakes for Children who hadn’t won a race was a popular one with our sponsor Champion safety wear providing 2 extra hat vouchers to cover the 3 way split. Jack Teague from the east Devon hunt took the first division on Blythe Spirit who was running in her first race. While Henry Pugh took the second winning on his 6th attempt but said it felt amazing to have his first winner at Cheltenham. Something he won’t forget. The 3rd division was won by Millie Parrtington from the Cottesmore. She has been riding since she was 1 and this was also her 6th attempt. The 2nd placed jockey in this race was 12 year old Harry Atkins who is attached to the Bourton Vale Equestrian pony racing school. He was very pleased to receive the area 9 bursary. The bursary is for a week at the British racing school in Newmarket with your pony. This is open to all area 9 children competing on the day. Harry wrote a lovely letter to the committee stating why he would like to go to Newmarket and what he thought he would gain from the experience. We feel privileged to be able to offer this award to children who may otherwise not have the chance. Harry is certainly the right size to be a jockey.

The Plough in at Ford sponsored the 138cm Intermediate race and this was like the who’s who of trainers children! With Kim Bailey, Fergal O’Brien and Tim Vaughan represented it was Edward Vaughan who came out on top and was very proud to say ‘Dad has never trained a winner at Cheltenham before’.

Moving onto the CalmsdenEstates 138cm Open. Roisin Leech daughter of trainer Sophie had to battle this race out with Thomas Bradburne son of Mark & Gee. They were both riding ponies who certainly know their job Roisin came out on top winning her 4th race of the season so far. She was thrilled to also win the area 9 trophy, something she had done 2 years ago on her previous pony.

Another fantastic pony Miss Wonderful won the Alan King Racing 148cm open race. She was well ridden by Violet Barton from the Quorn hunt. Violet is a real all rounder who also hunts, events and rides out for Laura Morgan. In her spare time she plays Hockey and Netball. The Area 9 trophy in this race was won by Alfie Rollett. This was only his 3rd ride and is lucky enough to have Otterburn lady. She won the Charles Owen final with Sam Twiston Davies and has won under 6 different boys.

Back to the Champion Safety wear novice race this time for 148 ponies. Another 2 hat vouchers were on offer the first being won by Chloe East winning her first race on Millie Butterfly, this is her 3rd season and will never forget the feeling of winning at Cheltenham. 3rd in this race on his first ever ride was Barnie Brotherton, grandson of Trainer Roy. 4th was Rory Richmond Watson who’s Grandfather for those of us old enough to remember owned The Snipe, winner of the Massey Ferguson on this hallowed turf. His dad had a bit of form between the flags too. The 2nd division went to Harvey Barfoot- Saunt who age 9 has a few years to go before he jocks dad Geoff off the pointers! This is Harvey’s first winner on this new pony. He said when I crossed the line it didn’t seem real, it felt like it was a dream. He wants to be a Jump Jockey. I think he will be given every chance.

Last but not least was the Calmsden Estates 148cm Intermediate. A long journey from Newmarket was rewarded with a win for William Humphrey with Istamouse. William is an experienced pony race rider and gave his pony a patient ride. This was only her 2nd race. He rides out for his Mum, Trainer Sarah. They had a good day as they also took the best turned out.

All races included Best turned out prizes kindly sponsored by the Herbert family’s Llanarth Estates, Holiday Cottages. so many of the ponies are so beautifully turned out it is really hard to choose just one.

Thank you to you all for your generous support. I hope you have enjoyed my round up of the day and found it interesting. Look forward to seeing you al again next year.
