20130714 - Area 9 Tet (6) (480x640)

John Church (Old Berkshire Hunt Pony Club) has been selected to captain the British Team at the biennial International Pony Club Tetrathlon Championships in Perth, Australia from 5 to 20 July 2014.

John has been a member of the OBHPC since 2002 and competed in his first Tetrathlon at the age of 10.  Last year, John won the Area 9 Tetrathlon Championships, was 5th in the UK National Championships, represented the winning England teams in both the UK and Eire Championships and captained the Central England team to victory in the UK Regional Championships.

John is delighted to have been selected to lead the Great Britain team and sees it as the highlight of his Pony Club career, which has included qualification for the National Tetrathlon Championships for the past 6 years as well as championship appearances in Eventing and Showjumping.

John is currently reading Sports Psychology at Roehampton University but returns home frequently to ride and to compete for Swindon Amateur Swimming Club.

olliehallOllie Hall joined the VWH pony club in 1999 and was interested in tetrathlon from the outset.  He has always been a keen sportsman with county swimming awards and was a medal winner at National level in school athletics. His love for horses particularly cross-country riding meant that tetrathlon was a natural attraction for him.

He completed his first tetrathlon at the age of 7 and it was evident that the shooting was going to be his biggest challenge as was the dressage in eventing.

Thirteen years on and his shooting, though still not a highlight, has improved from a score in double figures to a 920 out of a maximum 1000 score at the final selection trials for the GB team which were held at Bishop Burton College near Hull at Easter.

Training for swimming has been ongoing and he is a member of the Swimming Club at the University of Leeds where he is currently studying Economics. He has undertaken his running training himself and this is the area where he has made the most improvement over the last year coming in the top 3 at the selection trials.

Much of Ollie’s success must be attributed to the VWH Pony Club with its higher than average quota of boys. The camaraderie that he has been able to share with his teammates, especially Paddy Gilling with whom he has been on 5 winning teams at the National Tetrathlon Championships, has been pivotal to his achievement.

Ollie has also represented the VWH in showjumping and has evented at open level qualifying for the championships but choosing to focus on tetrathlon.

He has been a member of the VWH winning open boys team at the Tetrathlon Championships for the last 3 years, as well as the winning regional team (Central England) for the last two years. He also represented England at the Tetrathlon Championships at Bishops Burton as well as the Irish Tetrathlon Championships in Limerick, Ireland last year.

He is thrilled to be able to have the opportunity to represent Great Britain at the International Tetrathlon Championships in Perth, Australia, as this has been his ultimate goal.

Area 9 Pony Club
Accredited Instructors Course

At Rectory Farm, Duntisbourne Abbotts

MONDAY,  30th June 2014

with Vicky MacDonald

from  18.00hrs  – 20.30hrs

In Area 9 we have started a new format for the ‘Instructor CPD Courses’ in that we are trying to encourage DC’s to organise ‘Coaching Support’ days where you will be watched whilst coaching PC members, given some suggestions for the future and then have your Log Book signed. This will enable DC’s to ensure that the Instructors they employ are following PC methods and are ‘coaching’ to a suitable standard. This will NOT be a test but a chance to get some positive feedback from an experienced PC Coach.

We are using this course on 30th June to demonstrate how the ‘Coaching Support’ days will be of benefit to all in the future and it will also count as a CPD Course so that you can get your Log Book signed

Cost              Adults – £10          Pony Club Members £5

More details        email jcrew@onetel.com mobile 0785 585 2710

Please note the NFU Pony Club Instructors Course on 16th June at The Unicorn Trust is still going ahead as planned.

Best wishes

>AREA 9 – B Test Trainers

Below is a list of coaches who have offered their expertise to train your members for the B test.  It is up to you to find out how much they charge, I suspect there will be a slight difference amongst them.

If you only have one or two members wanting to train why not contact a neighbouring branch who could be in the same situation and get together.  This would be a really good way to keep the older members as once you have one or two members training and the younger ones watching it’s amazing how this encourages them to train for the test as well.  Members that don’t want to do the test should still be encouraged to train for it, you can always talk them into taking it nearer the time once they have done the work.

In order to be fully prepared for the test candidates should allow plenty of time for training, although both parts can be taken separately so they can concentrated on 1 section at a time.

The B test is a worldwide recognised test and is a good one to get into Camp America and to use when travelling the world and maybe needing to work on their way.
