Pony Club Championships Report – 2010
This year we managed to qualify for all three disciplines which was a fantastic achievement. The championships took place from the 14th- 17th August 2010.
On Sunday 15th we were represented by Jasmine Punter in the individual showjumping and by Gabriella Rose in the individual dressage. Gabriella was unlucky to be drawn second in the section which necessitated leaving home at 5 o’clock in the morning. She came 7th in the section . Jasmine jumped very well as the course was big and she had only just got the pony and so it was a great achievement for the new combination.
The other two members of the intermediate showjumping team, Persephone Rose and Sam Humphries, arrived that night ready to set up their tents and enjoy a good spaghetti bolognaise round the campfire. The following day got off to a good start as the team managed to jump clear in the first round to become one of the only 4 teams on a zero score. Therefore the second round was very late on in the day and we were one of the last to jump.. Gabriella Rose jumped another clear round and therefore did a very creditable double clear and the other 3 members had 8 faults each. Everyone did extremely well as the course was bigger than anyone had jumped before on their respective horses and we ended up in 7th place out of 37 teams. We were extremely pleased as 3 of us had already qualified for the eventing championships and didn’t think we were in the running for the showjumping as well.
On Tuesday the eventing championships took place and we were joined by Amilia Buchan and Oscar Puddick. Sadly Oscar badly injured his knee on the journey out and so wasn’t able to compete but his support was greatly appreciated. Therefore Amilia filled his place to join Gaby, Persephone and Sam in the team. Everyone one did reasonable dressage tests but the showjumping proved to be the most influential phase. Sam did an excellent clear round , Amilia and Persephone rolled one pole each and Gaby managed to pilot Roo round with only two down ( a significant improvement on his 6 down at the championships last year!). With the showjumping phase out the way we continued to tackle the cross country. There were a few bogey fences that were causing a lot of problems on the course and sadly Sam fell victim to one of these, however the 3 girls all had lovely clear rounds which left the team in 6th place in the end. This was a great achievement as 3 of the riders had also competed the day before in the showjumping and the ponies were tired from such an event!
Overall it was an extremely fun few days and we were very pleased with the results! We think we were the only pony club that was placed in both the showjumping and eventing at the championships and couldn’t have done it without our amazing trainers: Rhian Jones and Sarah Stewart.
