Pony Club Novice Team Eventing Review of 2017

The year started promisingly with 30 members interested in representing the Beaufort at novice level eventing. We had a mix of ages and experience which is how it should be. Our first event of the year was Shipton Moyne ODE where a number of Beaufort members went well and there were wins for Poppy Richardson and Rachel Hatherell. We held a BBQ and Badminton Horse trials film and quiz evening at the end of April which was fun and gave everyone a chance to socialise and mix away from the horses. William Fox Pitt did a great Badminton XC course walk for all our team competitors. It was fun and insightful and I think enjoyed by all. Once the evenings were longer, we were able to organise some team training sessions on a weekly basis coached by Rhian and Tim. We focussed mainly on arena based XC techniques. Our second home ODE at West Littleton is probably most memorable for being on one of the hottest days of the year! All competitors looked after themselves and their horses well in the heat and there were no problems. At novice level, there were wins for Milly Harvey and Poppy Clark with Beatrice Montgomerie earning best dressage. From here we moved towards the Area Eventing at Dauntsey. With 30 keen members, being part of novice eventing is about more than just team selection for areas. We were able to field four teams this year and there were a number of good performances. Details of who finished where are all on the web site! All 16 of our riders completed with our teams finishing 2nd, 5th, 7th and 11th. Real strength in depth on display. Our qualifying team of Rachel, Milly, Poppy and Tom headed to the Pony Club Championships at Cholmondeley Castle in Cheshire. They worked hard beforehand to hone their cross country riding speed and met to train together in the evenings. There were a lot of Beaufort competitors this year at the championships in various disciplines. This made the team ethos a lot of fun as well as being a good competition. The team performed well to finish fourth with Milly Harvey and Tockas taking individual 3rd in their section. It was very tight at the top with less than a show jump covering the teams. Not quite our day but a good result and incentive to come back to the champs and do even better next year!
