Wylye Valley Tetrathlon Report 2016

On the 27th and 28th August, lots of Beaufort Tetrathletes set off for the Wylye Valley Tetrathlon with lorries and trailers bursting to the seams with ponies, children, tents, BBQ’s, bikes and almost everything except the kitchen sink. Plan A was to camp overnight on the Saturday night however, when the forecast wasn’t looking so good a Plan B was formulated on Saturday to have a fun day and BBQ at Wylye Valley but then decamp back home later to sleep in our own beds!

SATURDAY: XC Day

On Saturday we only had XC to do. “PUNCHY” was the word of the day – a very punchy course for all of the levels! All the competitors seemed to take it in their stride but there were definitely a few grey looking parents!

The Frogs had an outstanding XC day with Archie Lucas, Miles Hall, Joe Collings and Chloe Philpott all going clear. Miles was unlucky to part company with Raggs but this was a very unlucky slip due to the excitement of going clear and as it was after the finish flags no penalties were incurred. Arabella did a great round too, one of the youngest competitors there, well done!

There were 3 x Mixed Tadpole teams. They all completed the XC Course well and well done to Tom Collings, Rosie Bush and Harry Smith for fab clear rounds. Rufus and Tanya also had great clear rounds, sailing round just opting for two ‘L’ Fences and Jemima just the one little stop – very impressive rounds on such a ‘punchy’ course!

The Mini Team set off for their XC course to the rumble of thunder and lightning and the rain beginning to come down. This did nothing to help the nerves of the parents. The minis were walking into the start box to start one of the toughest XC Courses they had ever been round! The course is used for the BE80 at Nunney Horse Trials. A full up course with several skinnies and combinations to skinnies. Three water obstacles and the last water sponsored by the Wilberry Wonder Pony charity in memory of Hannah Francis. All competitors gave it their all and managed to get round the course and come through the finish – a HUGE well done! There were only two clear rounds all day in the mini class so a great achievement to get round!

Charles Hall and Sam Bellord were in the Novice Junior Class, and also had a very tough challenge round the XC Course. Both had fab rounds with very respectable scores with only a few penalties.

Alice Edwards was the only Beaufort competitor in the Junior Girls team. Again riding round a very tough XC course, so well done.

After the excitement of the XC, the children settled down to play Monopoly followed by Cricket while the parents enjoyed some delicious Pulled Pork Wraps which the Wylye Valley Catering Committee sell. We then had a yummy BBQ (Thank you Phillip Hall for bringing the BBQ and being Head Chef) before setting off home for bed.

True to fashion the ‘Pearces’ needed rescuing en route home but thankfully managed to get all ponies and children home without too much delay and the Land Rover will be off to the garage before next season!

Sunday: Shooting; Swimming & Running

The next day everyone arrived bright and early to start another day competing. First was the shoot and the Range Officer was an Olympian which was very exciting!

The Frogs started off with the bean-bagging and came back with some fantastic scores. Most notably Chloe Phillpott with a 920 score – joint top shot of day!

The Tadpoles had turning targets which was a new test for them so well done for some good results and get practising those turning targets over the winter.

The Minis – some amazing Shooting results, well done Team Beaufort!

Juniors – Well done Charles, Sam and Alice, all great results on the shooting range.

Swimming  – It was a smaller than usual pool with only two lanes swimming at a time and quite warm water. Well done to everyone –  all that swimming practise and tumble turn practise is paying off with great results from all.

Running was in groups so a little more challenging to get off the start line without tripping over. Excellent performances from Joseph Pearce (Fastest Run), George Hall (second fastest run) and Xavier Abbots (second fastest run) and Charles Hall (third fastest run).

Results:

Frogs – Huge well done, some great individual placings and a Team 1st for Beaufort!

Tadpoles – Again some great individual placings and Well done Tom Collings for an individual 1st Place.

Minis – Well done Team 5th.

Novice Junior – Well done Sam and Charles who were 3rd and 4th and Team 2nd.

Junior – Well done Alice, Team 3rd.
