The Elms Tetrathlon – June 2017

On Sunday 4th June, a hardy team of 28 headed off to The Elms School, near Ledbury for a marathon event with all four phases of the Tetrathlon on one day. Only very few competitions attempt this feat: it is a very big ask for competitors, parents and organisers. However the compact site at The Elms makes it possible, provided you ate your Shredded Wheat in the morning!
FROGSPAWN
The Frogspawn kicked the day off bean bagging first thing, with excellent results putting their team into 1st place.
In their riding, Tilly G and Hector AL rode lovely clears on the lead rein as did Holly R off the lead rein. Arabella P rode her first round off the lead brilliantly. Laurie AL’s pony was a little cheeky at the start of his round but persistence paid off for Laurie and the second half of his round was perfect.
The rain began to fall heavily as everyone prepared to run, meaning a very wet run for all the Frogspawn. An excellent run from Laurie who was just pipped into 2nd place in the running.
A long wait for prize giving meant plenty of time to play and support the older teams and everyone took home a rosette: Holly 2nd & Hector 5th. Laurie, Hector, Holly & Arabella formed a Beaufort team who were 2nd. Tilly made up a mixed branch team that were 5th.
TADPOLES
We had 4 boys and 10 girls in the tadpole section. The boys (Rufus, Harry, Archie & Henry) did really well, although they did struggle with the closing of the gate on the XC course, they were still a strong team finishing with a team 3rd.
Individually Archie L was pick of the bunch in 7th.
The gate caused confusion all day. Our sharp eyed and well trained parents and children now know the rule book inside out (thank you Ruth for your rallies)! Consequently there were some scoring and rule issues that had to be ironed out. Say no more!
The girls also did really well, with Skye Winter doing a brilliant shoot of 800 and Ruby Butterfield getting best swim and best run.
The Girls team of Ruby B (1st), Amelie L, Skye W (6th) and Jemima P (2nd) won the team competition. Tabitha D (5th), Georgia G, Zara L with a member from the Cotswold finished with a team 3rd. Isobel C, Chloe P and Jemima G with a member of the West Warks finished with a team 4th.
MINIS
The Mini Boys team of Jack G, Xavi A, Archie G and Joseph P, along with Harry S (new at this level) all put up great performances. Joseph shot 820 with Harry very close behind on an excellent 800. Over 1000 each in the swim and run gave Joseph 2nd place. Team 3rd for the Beaufort team. Harry did even better, being part of a mixed team that won! Really great riding scores for the boys: three at 1400 and two on 1350. Well done. In the Mini Girls class Rosie B and Evie B made up a winning team with two from the Curre. Evie swam very well to pick up 4th place. Rosie scored maximum 1400 in the ride.

JUNIORS
There were five Junior teams in the competition. Our Beaufort junior members Jamie T and Anna D had a mixed team and were joined by a member from the North Hereford pony club and a member from the Curre Pony Club.
Jamie got off to a very good start with a score of 840 for shooting, he won best shoot for the Junior Boys and 3rd place individually. Anna jumped a lovely clear XC for maximum points. The Team came 3rd.
The cross country course was very kind and a good introduction to new Junior riders and riders or ponies who are not quite ready for a full-size junior course. Some of the jumps were narrow and a few show jumps were included in the course. It was a fun and friendly day with good team spirit although dampened a little by the heavy showers.
