Wylye Valley Tetrathlon August 2017

Report by Lucy Peevers & Tom Collings
LUCY: On a beautiful sunny bank holiday week-end, my sister and I set off for our last tetrathlon of the summer. We were both keen to go as I hadn’t competed since early July and Amy wanted a second chance at the 100 Nunney course (identical to the one used for the Regional competition a few weeks earlier). The format was slightly different from usual as the ride was on the Saturday and then the other three disciplines were all on Sunday. Lots of pony clubs turned up for the event (the biggest number they’ve ever had) but we were the only two representatives from the Beaufort in the Junior or Intermediate sections.
The ride was fantastic – beautifully designed courses in a great setting. The course was challenging with only one clear round in the intermediate/open class. We were allowed to school round the course in the afternoon and I went around the intermediate course!! Toby loved it and although I didn’t attempt every single jump, he flew over number 8 (the big skinny coming out of the water for those of you who know the course) and he flew through the water at 9 and 13. Amy took the learner at number 8 in the competition but flew through it first time when schooling later on.
The next day we returned to Nunney for the other three phases. It felt very strange to be there without all our tetrathlon friends. The shoot was in a (very smart) chicken shed and the swim was in a 15m pool so lots of turns. Finally, it was my favourite part of the competition (not) – the run. It was incredibly hot by now and the intermediate boys were allowed to do a 2km run instead of 3km. We ran in groups and I wasn’t last (not even second last!). Amy did a great run and came third with a time of 6.02 minutes.
Results came through quickly and both of us got team seconds. Amy was fifth individually and I just missed out on the individual rosettes. All in all, a really fun event (especially the riding) but we’d really like more people from the Beaufort to come next year as we really missed all our friends.

TOM: I had a wonderful weekend competing at the Wylye Valley.
The cross-country courses were all up to height and I decided to drop down a class and take the 500 penalties, the course caused many problems and with only handful of clears I wasn’t far behind.
Chloe had a few mishaps along the way but completed the course with a smile and Joe managed an unassisted clear round.
Sunday was another lovely sunny day. I managed 800 in my shoot Chloe 740 and Joe 800 bean bag throw, we all swam really well and ran our legs off.
Joe finished second overall with third best swim and second fastest run, Chloe 10th and I managed 7th.
A really great weekend and we finished with one of their famous chicken wraps!
