BEVERLEY RACE COURSE PONY RACING
Once again Imogen Carter and Tom Broughton travelled to Beverley last Sunday to represent Brocklesby at the Holderness Hunt Pony Club Race Day. This year the weather was more than kind to us, being very warm and the rain holding off until a few spots after the last race.
The riders arrived at the racecourse at 12 noon for declarations and a compulsory course walk (many thanks to Vicky Carter for helping with Tom’s declarations when it looked like we were going to be late!!!).
Imogen and Tom watched the first two races before it was time for Imogen to take part in the 138cm Open race, once the starter dropped his flag Westhill Festival Time (Roger) set sail for home and lead the field all the way winning by a good distance and setting a great target for Tom!
Tom’s first ride was in the next race which was for combinations of 148cm pony and rider never to have raced together before. It was a very nervous time for all concerned being the first time on the racecourse together for Tom and Green As Grass (Blaze). After what seemed like ages walking round the paddock (the groom was totally worn out!!) the ponies were walked to the start by the Holderness Hunt staff. The race was started and 9 ponies set off up the 5 furlongs to the finish line, Blaze was headed to start with by several keen ponies but didn’t take long to pass them all and again finished in an easy first place beating a regular rival of Tom’s into second by a fair distance.
The final race of the day was the Open 148cm race in which there were 4 runners. Tom and Fair Game (April), who has been his regular racing pony for the last two seasons, ran a tactical race allowing the others to go off at a fast pace over the first half of the 8 furlong course pushing on around the bend and into the home straight to finish second.
Many thanks go to the Holderness for a very well organised day which was once again thoroughly enjoyed by everyone and also to our supporters who travelled over the river to cheer on the jockeys.
