Pony Club Race Day Experience
I love to go racing and follow the star National Hunt horses so I decided to enter in the Pony Club Race Days at the best race courses, ( Cheltenham and Ascot, ) while I was still under 16 years and had a pony under 14.3hh. I worked on getting Mika fit by hunting with the bloodhounds, cantering in fields and sometimes going up Chris Gordon’s gallops. I used a real racing saddle but you don’t have to.
While the open races are very professional and the ponies are miniature thoroughbreds, the novice races have more normal ‘pony club’ ponies so Mika fitted in well. We used the real jockeys’ changing rooms and had to weigh out on the proper scales. The ponies were tacked up in the pre-parade boxes and were led round the paddock before racing on the real race course!
At Cheltenham the race was 8 furlongs, (1 mile,) Mika and another pony got ‘left’ at the start; we came 6th, overtaking one up the famous Cheltenham hill! At Ascot the race was 6 furlongs (3/4 mile) but I had practised my starts…Mika shot off and preferred the firmer going, coming third. (She was running on, if it had been 8 furlongs, we might have won!) I was led in to the 3rd position in the winner’s enclosure.
Of course, being from the Hursley, we also won ‘Best Turned Out’ both times!!
Mika loved it and now I have the challenge of turning her back into a normal pony again!
