Advanced Jockeys’ course, British Racing School
For the 1st time the British Racing School has run an Advanced Pony Racing Training Week, and it was deemed a resounding success by all!

The invitation only course for 10 elite pony racing jockeys was a week of intensive training with a variety of industry recognised experts including Olympic coach Yogi Breisner , ex-professional jump jockey Steve Smith Eccles, international Sports Scientist Jon Pitts and nutritionist Julia Scott Douglas.

The lead on the course was BRS Resident Jockey Coach, Richard Perham, who treated all 10 as though they were jockeys, and at the end of the week described them as “a credit to themselves and the industry”, he went on to say “I have been extremely impressed by the attitude and professionalism of all 10 jockeys and would suggest that they will all have long successful careers ahead of them”.

These sentiments were echoed by Yogi Breisner who put them all through their paces during a schooling session on Thursday; a lesson which was met with trepidation by the “flat” boys! But they had no reason, all ponies, some experienced and some not, behaved themselves and there was a real buzz about the place after successful conquering of the race hurdles.

Charlie Deutsch and Dominic Sutton were brave enough to school over the chase fences and certainly impressed in doing so!

Other sessions during the week included rules and regulations, use of the whip, horse assessment and pace awareness. It was Hector Crouch and George Crate who impressed in the pace awareness session when they managed to ride 9 furlongs within 3/100th of a second of the optimum time!

After a session on the Equichute under the guidance of Jon Pitts and Steve Smith Eccles the week ended with a trip to Newmarket racecourse and a presentation day.

There were 2 awards, the first being the “Most Improved Rider”, this went to Charlie Deutsch and he will be heading off for a week’s work experience with Paul Nicholls.

The second award of “Outstanding Performance” kindly sponsored by JSC Sport, was given to Hector Crouch, after being described by Richard Perham as “everything you look for in a successful sportsman”.

Hector will enjoy a week’s work experience at Sir Henry Cecil’s, a one to one training day with Richard Perham and a morning with Nick Luck on Channel 4’s the Morning Line where he will also be joined by Charlie Deutsch.

After an exhausting but exhilarating week it’s back to normality but look out for them all on the racecourse, now and in the future.

Lingfield Park Pony Club Racing:  Araminta Reed, Chloe Mariani and Harry Wates all competed in the races held at Lingfield Park in May.  Some excellent results and a little taster of the day they had, below:

ASCOT PONY RACING 2011

We had reasonable entries for the Pony Racing day at Ascot with three LLPC members taking part: Harry Wates (who won his race!), Hector Crouch (who was second in his race) and Araminta Reed (who was fourth in her race) – very good results!

It was a fun day and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves, including all the helpers and officials who were very pleased to be able to use all the superb facilities at Ascot.  We are exceedingly lucky to be able to hold a meeting at Ascot and I hope the pictures and hearing about the racing will encourage more children to take part.  You just need a pony under 20 years old, and to be between 10 and 16 years!  No special kit is needed – just the same as for a cross-country round but with a breastplate or martingale and a surcingle or overgirth as an additional measure to keep the saddle in place.

I had an email from one parent who said that their daughter, who was racing for the first time, said that it was the best thing that she had ever done!

Just in case you have decided you would like to buy that picture taken on the day, the photographer’s website is:  www.ivisualise.com

Many thanks to all our LLPC helpers and all the others who came to be our officials on the day.

 My trip to Ascot

When I went to ascot it was amazing!  The trip was long and even though I was nervous I was very excited.  When I got there I declared I was going to race and then me and my family put my saddle, bridle and kit in the jockey’s room.

All the jockeys in races 1, 2, 3 and 4 walked the course with Tim Lee, who showed us what to do and where.

After that we waited and then were weighed out after we had got changed.  For me it was very exciting as it felt like I was a professional.  We then waited as our horses were walked round the parade ring.  When the bell rang, we all mounted our ponies.

After that we walked down to the start and I was very nervous!  At the start the starter explained to us what to do, checked our ponies’ girths and before I knew it we were off!

After a very quick start I managed to steady Sparkie, my pony, and really push him on over the finishing line to win the race!

After we weighed in, we all received our prizes as our ponies were washed down and then we were finished.

It was a brilliant day and I really enjoyed it.

My Experience at Ascot

When we arrived at Ascot it was AMAZING!  I went off with my friend to see the changing rooms and tell Mrs. Tremlett we were here.  Then we went to a course walk with Tim Lee and he told us which course to take.

After that I got changed and went to weigh in.  I then mounted and received the Tack and Turnout prize!  We then proceeded to the pre-paddock and then we were led out to the track by the mounted escorts.  In the end I finished fourth!

I loved my experience at Ascot and I would love to go back there again next year!
