Equine Influenza (Horse Flu)

Equine influenza (flu) is a disease that affects the upper and lower respiratory tract of horses, donkeys and mules. It is very infectious and spreads rapidly through groups of horses with an incubation period of one to three days. Clinical signs are similar to other respiratory infections, making it difficult to confirm without laboratory tests, although rapid spread throughout a yard, accompanied by clinical signs, is usually indicative.

Rapid diagnosis is essential to differentiate it from other infections such as strangles.

 Clinical signs can include:

  • the sudden onset of a dry cough
  • a high temperature
  • slight enlargement or tenderness of the sub-mandibular lymph nodes
  • clear discharge from the nostrils and eyes
  • loss of appetite or depression
  • rapid breathing

It is easily spread by inhalation of the virus released into the atmosphere by infected horses and through contact with contaminated kit, such as dirty buckets, although the virus will not last for long in the environment.

Influenza is so contagious that there is a near 100% infection rate in unvaccinated horses. After contracting flu, horses will start to show clinical signs within one to three days and will spread the virus for a further five days.

In uncomplicated cases, the horse will usually fully recover within two to three weeks, but more complicated cases can lead to permanent lung damage.

Vaccination

To prevent the spread of equine influenza, it is important that horses are vaccinated regularly. The FEI now requires all horses in competition under its rules to be vaccinated every six months, instead of annually, and as from 1 January 2006 there will be fines for those who do not comply.

It is important that owners know why their horses are being vaccinated, as they don’t always see the effects of influenza. Vaccines are so effective that it is easy to forget what it was like when competitions were cancelled due to outbreaks.

Area 17 Dressage Clinic

North Down are planning to start a Dressage Clinic open to all clubs in Area 17.
They are really lucky to have secured Alison Maston-Moore as trainer and hope to meet on a monthly basis.
Each lesson would be 1 hr long with only 2 riders at a time.
The venue would be varied to help as many clubs interested.
Please contact Sandra Vollands at : sandravollands@aol.com if you are interested.
Please advise what level you ride at and what PC test has been obtained.
This is a great opportunity to get excellent tuition and develop your skills in the discipline of dressage, and it would also give everyone an opportunity to make new friends in different clubs (parents included!!).
