Visit to Puckeridge Hunt Kennels – December 2011 :-D

by Georgie Pitman

‘We started the hunt kennels visit by sitting on a semi circle of shavings in
a barn. Jack Pitman spoke about hunting within the law and how you dress and
jumping and laying trails, we passed around a bottle of fox pee, which is
what the trails laid smell of (not very nice!!!!!). The quad bike was
brought out and the rag that was dipped in fox pee was on the end of it so
we knew how the trail laying worked. Then Garry, the whipper-in and  kennel
huntsman, blew some horn calls, exciting the hounds and the horses! We then
went over to the flesh house where all the fallen stock (dead animals) from
the flesh round are taken. There were 2 dead calves that had just been
brought in. Jordan, the terrier man, demonstrated the humane killer
on one of the calves which was already dead, that is a special gun that
kills animals that need to be put down. We then went over to where the hounds
live and Garry brought out a few of the young ones, there was a lot of oohing
and arring from one family because the hound puppies they had walked were recognised.
Puppy walking is where you get a hound puppy and it lives with you for a
few weeks and then when it is fully grown it goes back to the kennels. You
usually get a couple of hounds rather than just one. We were introduced to
Luke the huntsman’s favourite hound, Jezebel, who is older than any other
hound and was stolen by gypsies for a few months but was found again, seeming
none the worse for her little adventure!!!!! Then we went to senior master Di Pyper’s house,Down Hall for lunch. I hope the fact that I can remember all this means that it was a good day, I certainly thought it was!!!
