Camp 2010

Camp this year returned to the fantastic facilities at Askham Bryan College. The site has a huge indoor school, an outdoor all weather school, a cross country schooling paddock and a hacking track. Unfortunately, the BE cross country course hasn’t been finished yet so we weren’t able to have access to it, but we are assured we will be able to use the course at camp next year. This year, members were able to have a choice of grass turnout or a stable in one of the big barns which was great as more members were able to come. It was also a luxury to have the use of the student facilities at the college including the accommodation with en-suite bathrooms, social room with tv/dvd player, sports halls and tennis court! A big contrast to the one room we all used to share on camp beds at market rasen racecourse!
Lovely to see so many new members at camp this year, I hope everyone had a fab time.

Huge thanks must go to our mum volunteers Tracey Carter, Helen Barth, Liz Willerton, Jackie Harness and Nora Ibbotson for being surrogate mums to everyone for the week, and doing such a fab job of organising ‘who goes where when’ especially on the rainy days when it was quickly rearranged so that everyone could ride in the indoor school and no-one got wet!
Thanks also to Kay Lamb and the rest of the Askham Bryan yard staff who were very helpful and allowed members to ride college horses in the instance of lame/tired horses which was very much appreciated by the members! Big thanks also to Simon Barth who made two great new cross country jumps and brought them with a few of our fences from Bagmoor to put in the cross country paddock.
We were also very priviliged to have some guests visit us this year. The York and Ainsty Hunt South brought 13 hounds (or six and a half couples, as we learnt) to see us which gave those of use who have never been hunting a bit of an insight. They had also organised a quiz for us, and the winning team (Flaming Nora!) won a free days hunting up front with the York and Ainsty South! We also had a go at whip cracking and horn blowing (some alot better at it than others!) Members also had a talk from a Baileys feed representative and a Pilates session, both of which were very interesting. Some rides also had a tour around the animal centre at the college and had a chance to get up close and personal with the wallabies/llamas/goats/snakes/lizards/meercats!

Quite spontaneously, on the last day we arranged a bit of a ‘its a knockout’ competition which involved rolling haylege bales, egg and spoon, three legged race, water and sponge race and carrying an instructor! It was a lot of laughs and a great way to finish off the week.

But of course, as well as being great fun, camp is also about the riding. Big thanks to chief instructor Tracy Rivett (or Princess Sparkly Pants) and the rest of instructors who taught the members this year. During the week, members ride twice a day and are marked in their rides on the cleanliness of their bedrooms, their horse, tack, stable and morning turnout. At the end of the week the instructors award a prize for the member who has collected most points throughout the week and another prize for the member who has improved the most/best achievement etc.

Each year, in addition to the prizes, the Camp Cup is awarded to a member who in the instructors and mum volunteers opinion has improved the most/worked the hardest/contributed the most to camp that year. So Rebecca Jenks was a very deserving receipient - always smiling, working hard with her own horse and then helping everyone else – especially on top of the muck heap which had to be stacked very high!

Photographs were taken of the members on Wednesday by David Neve, photos can be seen on his website .
