Area Competitions News

July has proved a busy month with summer camp and the area competitions keeping members busy. First up was the Area Dressage with Fergal McKiney producing an outstanding performance in the Intermediate section to win it overall and secure his place in the Championship in England in August. His score, alongside that of Gemma Elkin and Lindsey McIvor individual 6th place, ensured a 6th place for the team also. Congratulations also to Caitlin Platts finishing 10th in her section. Also well done to Amy McLaughlin riding in her first Regional competition and finishing 8th on the day.

Next up came the turn of the show jumpers, with 12 members making the trip to Rademon Estate guided by Chef D’Equipe, Andrew Thompson. Congratulations to Beth Thompson and Jenny Dunlop on their excellent performances in the highly competitive Mini-Major class.  They then went on to jump further clear rounds in the Junior Team alongside Amy McLaughlin and Paris Douglas. Clare Murnaghan also competed well on her temporary mount, Blue. Both the novice team of Ellen Thompson, Rory Murnaghan, Cara Moore and Caitlin Platts  and the intermediate team of Niamh McEvoy, Niall McEvoy and Nicholas Bothwell had a few unlucky poles but can feel pleased with their performances on the day.

The tetrathalon brought further success with Lindsey and Scott McIvor both finishing second in their respective classes. Matthew Murnaghan produced the best intermediate run on the day and finished a pleasing 2nd place overall also. Caitlin Platts had an excellent cross country round at this level and finished 6th in the inter girls. Rory Murnaghan was not to be outdone by older brother in the junior category, finishing 2nd also. Younger sister Clare also performed steadily over the two days, finishing 8th in what was a very competitive class. Our minimus team of Paris Douglas, Beth Thompson and Amy McLaughlin were delighted with their 3rd place rosettes, with Amy McLaughlin also producing the shoot of the day scoring 980 out of 1000 and finishing one place outside of the prizes in 7th individually.

Finally for July came the area eventing in Maddybenny. The intermediate team of Scott McIvor, Lindsey McIvor, Gemma Elkin and Nicholas Bothwell had some nice dressage scores and were feeling hopeful following the show-jumping phase. Cross country timings cost them and they finished outside the prizes. Congratulations to both Fergal McKinney, who finished 2nd, and Ella Duncan, who finished 4th in the Junior section. Well done also to the Regional Team of Caitlin Platts, Matthew Hempton and Amy McLaughlin who unfortunately got the worst of the weather. Amy was unlucky to finish just outside of the prizes again in 7th, a respectable result given the level of competition and the fact this was her first performance in this event.

Massive thanks to the parents and supporters who travelled to the competitions, often taking on a role to support the running of the event, as well as acting as chauffeur. Next area competition is the Home Championships at the end of August. Anyone intending to compete should notify Karen ASAP.
