A very warm welcome to South Shropshire Hunt Pony Club 2014!

I hope you’ve all had a good summer… the camps were fab.. thank you to everyone who was involved in organising them and helping out. Enjoy the rest of the school holidays! A new schedule for the autumn will be coming out asap.

Well done to our Intermediate showjumping team who came 11th out of 26 teams at the Pony Club Championships at Cholmondely. Some unlucky fences and a pony pulling out with a sore leg, but we had fun at a well organised event with a great atmosphere.

And well done South Shropshire for a great performance and for terrific team spirit at the Area showjumping qualifiers.

Sebastian won the Pre-Novice class! He was eighth in the ring so had a long nervous wait to find out the result. The team (Rachael, Megan S, Hannah, Sebastian) unfortunately weren’t placed in a very strong field of over 60 competitors.

The Novice team (Georgie, Lucy, Megan L, Jack) had a very long day – 32 teams from Warwickshire to Cheshire battling it out from 9am til after 5.30pm! Jack got through to the jump off as an individual and very nearly went clear – agonisingly he tipped the last fence.

Meanwhile the Intermediate team (Melissa, Emily, Imogen, Archie) were on a complete rollercoaster. Here’s Melissa’s report… we had a great day at Area showjumping. After an early start we ended the first round on 0 faults, after great clears from Emily, Imogen and Archie. We were the first team to jump again in the second round. The grass surface proved trickier, but clears from Emily and Melissa, 8 faults for Imogen, and 8 faults and a few time faults for Archie meant we finished on 8 faults. We waited anxiously to find out if we would get a placing then realised there were three teams tying on 8 faults. and we were required to jump off for two Championships places! The jump off was on grass too, and we were first to go. Clears from Emily, Archie and Melissa with good times put pressure on the other teams, and allowed Imogen to ‘go for it’, she had an unlucky 4 faults, but it didn’t matter as we finished on zero faults as a team. Watching the other teams knock poles we realised we’d won! We weren’t expecting it at all . Emily’s three clears also gained her 4th place individually and a Championship place, so well done her!  Thanks to Vanessa for coaching and to Kate V and parents for supporting, helping with plaiting etc and providing great picnics! Bring on the Championships!

Here’s Jonquil’s ‘match report’…..

I was really impressed with the dressage tests. Annie ,Freya and Flora all pulled off very consistent tests all in the 30’s – particularly Freya on 32 . Sophie was disappointed with Cash who didn’t like the flies. The SJ caused trouble all day, however both Freya and Flora went clear, Annie tipped one and Sophie rode well but had two down. The XC was tricky at number 5 which was a triangular skinny with bright orange carrots in it (after four very easy fences.) Flora was first to go and jumped a clear inside the time, Annie went clear with time penalties, Freya had two stops but finished well . Sophie had the pressure of having to jump clear for the team score which she did brilliantly and finished with the biggest smile on her face! . Well done all the riders. It was very exciting that the team were 5th, Flora was 2nd in her section and just missed qualifying individually. Annie came 7th and Sophie 8th. They should all be very proud and particularly Annie and Freya representing the club at their first Area Trials. Thanks to all the Mums, Dad and Kate who all rallied round helping and having lunch ready, an excellent picnic from Jane Miles.
Team spirit was fab and we all had a lovely day.

Thank you so much to everyone who helped out at the One Day Event. What a glorious day. I hope the fence judges avoided sunstroke.

We had great fun as well as winning a team second, fourth and fifth, plus individual third for Emily and sixth for Freya. We were all proud of Felicity, Guy and Oliver, the South Shropshire Ducklings, who all jumped really well but lost their way a bit in a complicated course. Better luck next time.  A good start to the season. We’re all fired up now for the next one!
