About Area 10

Welcome to the Area 10 website

Area 10 covers South Wales and the Borders, and welcomes members who would like to have fun and learn more about riding and horse care. There are opportunities to compete or just enjoy riding.

Our Area Representative is : Mrs Isobel Mills

Isobel grew up in Shropshire where, as a child, she was an active member of the South Shrops Pony Club. She was lucky enough to breed her own ‘horse of a lifetime’ who she evented. She was DC of the Golden valley Hunt branch from 2007-2010 and is still an active horse owner and rider. Isobel is a strong advocate of the aims and objectives of the Pony Club and the benefits that membership brings.

The Pony Club is an international voluntary youth organisation for young people interested in ponies and riding. Founded in England in 1929, and granted independent charitable status on 1st January 1997, there are around 345 Branches and 600 Centres in the UK alone. The Pony Club has been the starting point for a large majority of equestrian team members and medal winners.

The Pony Club is represented in no less than 27 countries with a worldwide membership exceeding 110,000 making it the largest association of young riders in the world.

Objectives

The objectives of The Pony Club are:

  • to encourage young people to ride and to learn to enjoy all kinds of sport connected with horses and riding
  • to give instruction in riding and horsemastership and to educate Members to look after and to take proper care of their animal
  • to promote the highest ideals of sportsmanship, citizenship and loyalty to create strength of character and self-discipline

Membership

Membership is available to children until the end of The Pony Club Year or the Centre Membership Subscription Year, whichever is relevant, in which they become 25 years old.

Here in Area 10,Training and enjoyment, challenge and achievement, fun and friendship are all very important to us. Whilst it is always wonderful to see our Members succeeding at the Championships and other competitions, we feel personal achievement and growth are the most valuable aspects of Pony Club life:  lifelong friendships and Horsemanship are our true goals. The Pony Club offers you an excellent route for refining your horsemanship through its unique Test system, with Achievement Badges and Efficiency Tests going right up to the A test, which is highly thought of all over the world.

All Branches are run entirely by volunteers without whom it would be impossible to provide such a varied programme, and we are immensely grateful to all of them.  Branches welcome every parent as a volunteer, as much for their skills outside the equestrian world as in it.  There are a myriad of jobs to be done!

We run many different Competitions in Area 10, catering for a broad range of members, with or without a horse or pony, each challenge needing different skills and talents.  Many Branches also run team ‘friendly competitions’ for members and their families – there is no ‘i’ in team! Our venues are provided by very generous landowners and equestrian centres who on many occasions give their facilities for free, or if they do charge, keep their charges to a minimum to support the Pony Club, who are grassroots of equestrian sport.

I hope you will enjoy being part of Area 10. If you notice that our recently updated Area 10 website needs any page added or corrected, please contact Julie, our Web Administrator. Please do also send Julie photographs, reports and any news you may have!
