Mini International Tetrathlon | Sat 29 – Sun 30 Jun 2024 | Oxtalls Farm, Stroud
Area 13 had 3 members go to this new competition based at Oxstalls cross country. We were represented by Alice H & Amalia N (Hampshire Hunt) and Georgina G (Vine); all 3 representing Southern England and Alice having the honour of representing England.
Day 1 started with all 3 producing very good shoots, all in the 800’s, Amalia managing a PB of 880. The 2 minute swim saw them all score in the 900’s with Alice being the closest to reaching 5 lengths or 1000 points.
The Mini Girls ran first on Day 2, 2 laps of a field on fairly flat, if a bit rough, ground. Alice lead her heat pushing all the girls in the Southern team to keep up with her. Great times were the result, with all 3 girls running fantastic PBs – Alice and Amalia being well under the 4 min goal for more than 1000 points.
We knew the ride phase was going to be challenging and it certainly was. Mini Girls, 11yrs & under, cross country ride is 80cm. This was a true championship course with every fence very up to height and of a technical level that most young riders would not have seen. The girls rode at the end of the day which allowed them to watch plenty of others and work out where they could make sensible decisions about taking ‘L’ fences to bring themselves home safely and with as many points as possible. Alice did a lovely job of showing how this could be done and crossed the finish with over 1000 points. Amalia was riding a fairly new pony and did a lovely job of getting to the end of the course with some points where many didn’t. Georgina was having a super rhythmical round choosing ‘L’ fences where she felt she needed when she had a very unfortunate fall on the flat, such a shame but pony and rider are fine and live to fight another day.
Alice, finishing 29th and Georgina, finishing 55th, helped Southern Green team to finish 11th and Amalia, finishing 43rd, helped the Southern Reds into 15th place. Alice’s England team placed 3rd.
Congratulations to all 3 girls and to their support teams who got them there!
Area 13 Tetrathlon Qualifiers | Sat 22 – Sun 23 Jun 2024 | Iping Cross Country & Churchers College
It wasn’t very many months ago that Andrea Hurley, Kylie Brown and I had a meeting to discuss whether we thought we could hold an Area Tetrathlon, the rest is history.
Saturday was held at Iping by kind permission of Amanda Lakin and offered the ride phase of the Tetrathlon, hunter trial classes 70-100cm and clear round 40-60cm. The course looked fabulous, the ground was perfect, the Hampshire Hunt working hunter fences looked stunning even the weather behaved. The cross country course provided some challenges but offered plenty of ‘L’ fences so that all rounds were confident and educational. The arena riding was scored positively which encouraged determined riding and resulted in big smiles and treat bags for their ponies.
Sunday was held at Churchers College in Petersfield and the school basked in glorious sunshine for our shoot, beanbag, swim and run phases. The Junior, Intermediate and Open classes had good entries with those from several different Areas chasing qualifying cards for the National Championships. Congratulations to Molly B (Bisley & Sandown Chase), Madeleine E (Chiddingfold), Roddy G (Vine), Erin B (Hampshire Hunt), Molly W (Vine) and Emma H (Chiddingfold) for qualifying for the Championships.
