Of the known cases, 6 were vaccinated, 36 were confirmed unvaccinated, the remainder are either unknown or unconfirmed. 58% <strong>of the affected horses had recently moved premises before becoming unwell<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<em>Source: <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/email.pcuk.org\/c\/AQiSyBUQz86aAhjkiaEUIPKQ9hMo75HBCAbmuKBjYhxqqr5NMH0kD5mVJERW4WN4dE06a1zO3JPC\"><em>EIDS <\/em><\/a><em>(Equine Infectious Diseases Surveillance)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Symptoms of Equine Influenza <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Please stay alert for symptoms, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dry cough<\/li>\n<li>Fever<\/li>\n<li>Nasal discharge<\/li>\n<li>Loss of appetite<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If a horse shows any of these signs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Isolate immediately<\/li>\n<li>Contact your vet<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Movement of Horses<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With cases spread widely across the country, moving horses between yards or to events currently carries a higher risk. It is reasonable and expected that passports should be checked for vaccination status at events in the current climate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Precautions at Events <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stay a safe distance from other horses and ponies<\/li>\n<li>Do not allow horses or ponies to touch or sniff each other<\/li>\n<li>Do not allow others to pet or touch your horse or pony<\/li>\n<li>Officials to keep touching of horses and ponies to a minimum<\/li>\n<li>Tack checkers\/stewards should consider using gloves or anti-bacterial spray between horses and ponies<\/li>\n<li>If staying over, clean and disinfect stables between use<\/li>\n<li>Avoid communal grazing<\/li>\n<li>Do not allow drinking from communal water troughs<\/li>\n<li>Do not share tack, equipment, buckets or haynets.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Further Reading<\/em><\/strong><em> &#8211;<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/email.pcuk.org\/c\/AQiSyBUQz86aAhjkiaEUIPSQ9hMo75HBCADOU6GRe42eF7tUA7yNj28TBzcYaSvvjNJQ8ngfbLy6\"><strong><em>Biosecurity at Events<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Protecting your horse<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Vaccination<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ensure vaccinations are up to date. Unlike illnesses such as Strangles-causing bacteria, the Equine Influenza virus can spread over a kilometre &#8220;on the wind&#8221;, so it can be hard to contain. This makes vaccinations all the more important.<\/p>\n<p>All the current commercial strains of vaccine are effective. If your horse or pony hasn&#8217;t had a booster in the last six months, it is sensible to bring their vaccination forward. Vaccinated animals can still be affected, but much less so than unvaccinated ones and will have a quicker recovery. If all the horses at a stable yard are vaccinated, then the virus is unlikely to take hold in the yard.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Additional Safeguards at your yard <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Quarantine new or
