About us (Then and Now)

The Banwen & District is based in the small ex-mining village of Onllwyn situated at the top of the Dulais Valley in south east Wales. We are a small club with a proud history.

The Club was formed in 1956 by the members of the “West Glamorgan Hunt Supporter’s Club”. The Annual show, the “centerpiece” of the Club was held at Ton Y Fildre Farm in Banwen and meetings held at the “Pant” in Roman Road. In the early sixties, the show was moved to the Onllwyn Welfare Grounds where for many years it was an important part of the Equestrian Calendar offering BSPS and BSJA classes.

Since the early days of the Prince Phillip Cup, Banwen has “been there”! We qualified in 1959/60/61/65/77/80/81/83/96/07 & 2017, and brought the Cup home in 1977 and 1981.

Although, of late, Banwen has been primarily known for Mounted Games, we have competed at Area Level in jumping, dressage, and the quiz. Teams from “The Banwen” have competed in many National Finals over the years and our current Secretary jumped in the Foxhunter finals at Wembley (HOYS to the younger reader!) in 1973. Many of our past members have gone on to pursue equestrian based careers.

The Club is enjoying  increased interest offering as wide a range of equestrian activities as we can, whilst building on our strong base of Mounted Games.

The current DC is the daughter of the first club secretary and niece of the trainer of the first Wembley (HOYS) games team.

Banwen PC in the place for “kids and their ponies to have fun”! Our field is in Wembley Avenue, Onllwyn so all our members still get to “ride at Wembley”!
