PC Intermediate Eventing Championships, Aug 2016

Having won the Area 9 Eventing at the end of July, Sasha Green, Amelia James, Ella Pitman And I (Jess Telford) travelled to Cholmondeley Castle , Cheshire on the 22nd August to take part in the Intermediate Eventing Championships on the 23rd.

On our arrival the ground was sodden from some considerable rain over the previous few days but luckily the earlier Beaufort Hunt competitors had left up the gazebo so having settled the horses we made camp.  After a couple of very comprehensive and useful course walks from Rhian we enjoyed a tasty supper kindly cooked by Helen James in the company of our parent supporters , Rhian, Lucinda and Belinda Ralph, our team manager.

Our dressage tests were reasonably early on the Tuesday morning so we were up to plait and groom to ensure a good turnout.  We all rode a fairly solid, if not startling tests to score in the low to middle range of 30’s and though although not elated at this stage, we were satisfied. With over 100 individual competitors and 26 teams it was very difficult to gauge how we were doing so we went into the show jumping with competitive spirit and open minds. With clear rounds from myself and Amelia and only one pole each from Sasha and Ella we only added 8 points to our overall score.

It was clear from a few checks on how the cross country course was riding that it was causing many issues with many competitors having stops, withdrawing or being eliminated so it was with some nerves that we warmed up and awaited our turn in the afternoon. I was first to go and thrilled that Albert brought me home clear and inside the time swiftly followed by Sasha, Amelia and Ella who all went clear within the time.  The cross country riding phase from the Beaufort Hunt competitors had now put us firmly within medal contention but it was a long wait before results were announced.

We were pipped to the post by the Burghley Pony Club with 97.5 but were thrilled to be Reserve Champions with 103.2 points ahead of third place Essex and Suffolk Hunt with 112.4 points.  What’s more, we had three individual section placings with Amelia coming 2nd, Sash 4th and me 5th.

We would all like to thank Lucinda and Belinda for their support and encouragement and particulary Rhian who held our hands throughout and stayed to the very last minute of the whole Championships to see us being awarded with our rosettes and numnahs.  We also all won membership of British Eventing for next year so our horses will be busy in 2017!
