Bicton Tetrathlon – May 2017

The Beaufort Tetrathlon Team sent 28 competitors to the recent Inter Area Competition at Bicton in Devon during May Half Term. This event has become a happy stamping ground for our members, who cannot wait to enjoy all this fabulous event has to offer with a beautifully built course and plenty of fun and socialising in the camp site!
Quite a number travelled down on the Monday evening to get installed in the stables and camp site. This forward party put up out Tetrathlon marquee which provided a focus for our large entourage.
Classes at Bicton start with Mini and work up through Novice Junior, Junior, Inter and Open. The Novice Junior class is a great one for first year Juniors who prefer to jump the 80cm course rather than 90cm.
Tuesday morning early and everyone was at Exmouth Leisure Centre for the Shoot and Swim phases. A new M&S nearby provided a useful pit stop to stock up with food to last a few days.
The shoot phase took place in twin sports halls to allow 2 x details at a time. 12+9 = 21 children shooting in each time slot.
In the Open class Jess shot 840. Our best Intermediate shooters were Amy & Ella with 720. Top Junior shooters were Poppy & Will (920) whilst Orlo shot an excellent 940 in the Mini Class.
Swimming followed at the same location. Jess put in a fabulous effort to swim 10L 7M. Henry in Inter Boys 9L 3M. Best Beaufort Inter Girl Amy. Our best Junior boy swimmer was Tom. Poppy in Junior girls swam a stonking 9L 9M and George S our best Mini Boy with 5L 9M.
All on the road again back to Bicton Arena. Further building of tents and installing horses ensued. Then a comprehensive course walk of the ride and run phases. Bicton is used for BE Horse Trials and so the standard of fence construction and ground preparation is very good. Good grass cover was evident on the course although in places it was slippery due to sporadic showers.
The Minis had an especially large and meaty corner to contend with—one that looked more like it belonged in the 90cm course.
The Junior course was up to height all over. Mostly straight forward but there was a corner and later a ditch to house combination.
In  the evening the whole party enjoyed an excellent BarBQ and get together. Many thanks to Antonia for co-ordinating the bringing of food. We all ate royally which set up the children nicely for the annual informal evening rugby match—open to all comers, all genders, all shapes and sizes. They played in into the dusk and were extremely hard to round up!

Mercifully a dry night, especially for those of us in tents! First off in the ride phase were the Open competitors. Very well done to Jess for a superb clear on Albert. Henry also very well done for a clear round his first Intermediate Tet. The Intermediate girls did really well—clear rounds for Ella and Maddy. Amy had a few faults but still scored well. In the Junior Class both Tom & Will were clear. Josh had one error. Sam & Charles did very well indeed to get round their first 90cm Tets. Jack had a storming round but a navigational error cost him dear in the points. The Junior Girls produced some very consistent results: Clears from Poppy, Rachel, Meg, Bea, Grace, Finnola, Belle & Anna. Just 4 time faults for Lucy. Alice and Millie one small error each. Tegan’s pony slipped badly and lost some confidence early on but she got him back on track and finished with gusto.
Our friends from the Minchinhampton PC, Ollie and Betsy, rode very well indeed. Ollie completed the ride in Junior Novice with just one error. Betsy whizzed round clear.
Mini Boys Orlo and George S rode excellent clear rounds. George H rode with great determination for just a few faults. George L deserves the prize for perseverance. He got his pony round that course somehow—bravo! Monty is without a pony at present and so could not compete in this phase.

The run phase moved to a more open location than last year. Much better although still perhaps on the short side. Amy was our best Inter Girl runner. Tom & Will in Junior boys ran within a second of each other for 1205 and 1200 points respectively. Sam & Charles both scored 1000 points. In Junior girls Poppy scored 1220 to win the run phase. Next best Beaufort girl was Rachel on 1035. In Minis, George H was our best runner.

So a great competition for our members. Results as follows: –
