Pony-Racing

Anyone can have a go at pony racing  – but you do have to have a pony (148cm or under) not a horse.

How to get started – We arrange the occasional Pony Racing taster rally on the gallops of a local racing stables. Contact Will Pugh or Fiona Williams Jones for details of the next racing rally.

THERE ARE 3 ORGANISATIONS WHICH ORGANISE PONY RACING

1. The Pony Club – Pony Club race days are often held at some of the UKs most prestigious race courses such at Cheltenham Wincanton Aintree etc. Dates and venues and entry forms can be found on the pony Club main website under Pony Racing. This is a wonderful chance to race on the beautiful surface and surroundings of a major race course. The audience just tends to be friends and family of the children riding. To enter these races the rider and pony combination must have attended a minimum of 2 Pony Club rallies (ideally including a  race rally) You need to read the Pony Club race day rules on tack and equipment.  children race on all types of pony – so just go and have some fun – not many people get the chance to race on the big race courses. If your pony appears to be over the height limit for the competition you have entered you will be asked if you have a height certificate  (128cm or under /138 cm or under or 148cm or under). If you don’t have a height certificate and someone queries the height of your pony you may be disqualified.

2. The local hunts – Llangeinor and Glamorgan Hunt etc often host a Point to Point race and include a Pony race as part of the days events. These are fantastic events to race at as you will have the full audience who have come to watch the days point to point races. Plus the bookies even take bets on you. These events are great fun whether you are racing on your cuddly shaggy pony just for the thrill of it or racing to win on something a bit more flashy- it doesn’t matter the atmosphere is fantastic. If your pony appears to be over the height limit for the competition you have entered you will be asked if you have a height certificate  (128cm or under /138 cm or under or 148cm or under). If you don’t have a height certificate and someone queries the height of your pony you may be disqualified. To enter these races both you and your pony will have to become members of the Pony Racing Authority.

3. Charles owen Race course series. These events are much more competitive and you really need to have raced before at point to point and pony club events before entering one of these events. The ponies are  small race horses and most of these children are aiming to have a career in racing – but if you happen to have a good racing pony and have got the bug they are well worth attending. To enter these races both you and your pony will have to become members of the Pony Racing Authority.
