Report from Karen Bilsby on the Offas Dyke Endurance Group’s Introduction to Endurance Riding

On Sunday Sarah took Cello to the Offas Dyke Endurance Group who had
kindly invited PC members to attend for an introduction to endurance
riding. We were made to feel very welcome and it was all very calm and
well organised. After a briefing they were paired up for a 15k ride
through the Lydney Park Estate along farm tracks, across the deer-park
and through woods – fantastic going with lots of opportunities for
cantering. Members learnt about the vetting process and how best to
ensure that their ponies passed, especially how to ensure their pony’s
heart-rate was low enough by pacing themselves through the ride and
cooling them off and ensuring they were hydrated afterwards.
All members received a completion rosette, an intro to endurance riding
badge and a gorgeous 3 tier Merlin rosette (the name of the level of the
ride they did) in PC colours. Placings were worked out on the speed
(penalties for being too fast or too slow), and the vetting results. And
amazingly despite Cello being very excited his heart-rate was low so
Sarah was lucky enough to come 4th.
Highly recommend this for anyone whatever the size or type of their
pony, it really is a fun sport for all. There are various levels of
rides and some, like this one, can be done with just an averagely fit
pony. Miles are recorded and add up to earn badges as you go along so
you can enjoy it without being competitive if you want to. Having said
that as the performance formula is based around having a fit, sound pony
rather than the fastest it really is possible to be competitive if you
want to, yes there were some Arabs there but there were also a lot of
cobs and small ponies. So if you would like to ride in beautiful areas
that you would not normally get access to give it a go.

Area Horse Trials and Area Dressage – Two Reports from Issy Manning

On July 22nd it was Area 9 Horse Trials at Dauntsey Park. Georgie Toole did brilliantly to come 4th individually in her Novice section on Magic. She had the best Dressage in her section, clear show jumping, clear cross country, but had some annoying time faults for going too FAST !!

On July 26th it was Area 9 Dressage at Frampton Court. It was an extremely long day for some of us and was horrible weather all morning! We started at 9.06 with Genevieve Manning riding Harry in the Novice section as an individual (unfortunately Brooke and Amber pulled out) and they dis a very nice test for 65.9 percent which was just out of individual placing, 10th. Next was Georgie Toole on Magic in the Open and they pulled a 2nd place out of the bag to qualify for the PC Champs for the third year. Well done! Then the regional team tests: Tiggy Manning riding Bobby (borrowed from Milly Cox – thank you) came 2nd in her section with a fabulous 69.5 percent, repeating last years result when she was 2nd on Badger. Lottie Gilderson was 4th in her section on Charlie with a 68.5 percent. Flora Webb on Zing was 8th in her section with a 59.3 percent. These three girls were placed Team 4th and qualified for the regional Champs at Rectory Farm in August. Our debut riders at Area regionals were Mia Smith and Lucy Eastham who both rode great tests to come 16th (66 percent) and 20th (63 percent) in their sections and unfortunately were riding as individuals as Ethan pulled out so they had no team.Well done to all the girls, horses and parents. Hopefully next year we can field some full teams and really SMASH it!!

Grassroots Championships Dressage and Show Jumping Teams

Issy Manning reports that Malvern Pony Club were represented at the regional Grassroots Championships at Rectory Farm on 27th and 28th August in Dressage and Show Jumping. Our Dressage Team that qualified was Lottie Gilderson, Teagan Manning, Lucy Allsop and Phoebe Watts. Great riding from all the team; we were just out of the team placings, however Lottie went through to a ride off in which she was placed 2nd individually! Well done Lottie and Charlie!

On Sunday 28th our qualified Show Jumping Team was Lucie Beard, Sarah Bilsby, Teagan Manning and Lottie Gilderson. Sarah joined the team as Esme Ruff who had qualified originally was on holiday. Again we had great riding and we finished on a team score of 8 faults after 2 rounds of jumping on grass and then in the main arena. We were tied in 7th place with several teams but our time put us 11th. Both Lottie and Sarah managed to get through to the jump off with double clears.

After a makeover in the lorry park (a quick mane pull and plait up of Oliver Beard) we managed to get Team 6th in the Tack and Turn Out! Well done to all the girls and ponies!

Teagan Manning, Sarah Bilsby, Natalia Morrison and Lottie Trevethan represented us in the Junior competition. After 2 rounds they finished with just 4 time faults between them and, along with 4 other teams on 4 faults, went forward to the jump off. They all put in yet another clear round, to come 4th overall out of 35 teams.

Our Novice team was Katherine Smith, Clare Smith, Esme Owen and Lydia Webster. They coped well with a tricky course and rather challenging ground but did not manage a place this time.

A huge well done to all who took part!!

Cotswold Triathlon Report by Sarah Gilderson

On Sunday 22nd March, the first U8/9 Malvern team for a very long time, took part in the Cotswold triathlon which was held at Cheltenham College. The team consisted of Harriet Nions, Lucy Alsop, Mia Smith, and Lottie Gilderson. Each individual produced some good performances, particularly in the run and swim phases. This was the debut by Deal Top” href=”#”>competition for all but one of the competitors so it was extremely exciting to see everyone come home with a rosette. The girls team ended up 5th out of a strong field of 10 teams and with some greater shooting experience look to be a promising combination for the by Deal Top” href=”#”>future. Special congratulations should go to Lottie Gilderson who produced personal yes results in the shoot, swim and run phases to end up in first place individually by over 180 points and to Lucy Alsop who finished in 8th place individually. Sarah Bilsby who was competing in the U11 class produced a personal best swim and helped her mixed team to 4th position. We also had 2 boys competing for their first time. In the U8’s by Deal Top” href=”#”>competition Alex Smith produced 3 solid performances in the bean bag throwing, run and swim and ended up in 5th place individually and helped his mixed team to 2nd position. Special mention also to Adam Nions, who although very young for his class, competed well and by Deal Top” href=”#”>earned by Deal Top” href=”#”> himself a special rosette. Well done to everyone. What a great start to the season!! Please do get in touch ( ) if you are interested in having a go yourself Ages 4 – 21 all welcome.

Lottie Gilderson,Sarah Bilsby, May Chevenix-Trench and Jack Bilsby all competed in the Area 10 triathlon by Deal Top” href=”#”>competition at Monmouth. The classes were hotly by Deal Top” href=”#”>contested with record entries from all over the country and some impressive performances to by Deal Top” href=”#”>match.

Our Malvern representatives were put into mixed teams with other individuals so that they were all able to compete for a team as well as themselves. Sarah’s team came 6th and Mays team 8th, out of a huge field of 17 teams in the mini girls and boys. Jack’s team were placed 9th in the junior girls and boys and Lottie’s team won the tadpoles girls and boys. Lottie was also placed 4th individually.
