The following guidelines have been put together to help Official Stewards, Branch team trainers and competitors prepare for the Area Competitions. The turnout judges are looking for safe and comfortable tack, and ponies and riders who are well turned out. Uniformity is not a requirement.
TACK
Supple and well cared for
Bridle – fitting of throat lash / noseband / bit
Stitching
Saddle – fitting including numnah
Girth straps / stirrup leathers
Check irons are correct size for boot, irons polished, correct way round
PONY
Clean with allowance for stable/grass kept
Mane/tail clean & tidy, have they plaited?
Eyes, nose & dock clean
Feet well shod/trimmed, hoof oil
RIDER’S DRESS
Clean & neat
Correct standard, well fitting hat Tidy hair, No ear rings Pony Club Sweatshirt or jacket (depending on the event)
Badge / gloves / shirt / tie
Beige, cream or white jodhpurs
Chaps (matching boot colour) no fringes
Long boots or jodhpur boots, clean with safe sole

Members must always wear a protective hat when mounted, to the standards specified below.
The Pony Club aligns its riding hat standards with those of other British Equestrian Federation (BEF) Member bodies. It is strongly recommended to check other governing body and individual Pony Club sports rulebooks regarding specific hat standards, as they may have differing standards.
Only hats to the following specifications are acceptable at any Pony Club activity as of 1st January 2025:
