{"id":1245,"date":"2024-05-25T22:20:44","date_gmt":"2024-05-25T21:20:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/branches.pcuk.org\/seskinore\/?page_id=1245"},"modified":"2025-10-24T19:14:01","modified_gmt":"2025-10-24T18:14:01","slug":"pony-club-hat-body-protector-whips-stirrup-rules","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/branches.pcuk.org\/seskinore\/pony-club-hat-body-protector-whips-stirrup-rules\/","title":{"rendered":"Pony Club Hat, Body Protector, Whips &amp; Stirrup Rules"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n\r\n<section class=\"full-width-text py-5\">\r\n    <div class=\"container\">\r\n        <div class=\"row\">\r\n            <div class=\"col-lg-10 mx-auto\">\r\n                <h2><strong>Hat Rules 2024<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/resources.pcuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Hat-Rule.pdf\">Current Hat Standards &#8211; <\/a>click here for list of accepted standards<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is mandatory for all riders at Pony Club events to wear a protective helmet at all times when mounted with a chinstrap fastened and adjusted so as to prevent movement of the hat in the event of a fall. This rule defines the quality of manufacture that is required. The individual Sports also have additional requirements with regard to colour and type.<\/p>\n<p>To unify hat standards across The Pony Club, British Eventing and British Riding Clubs, require all hats to be checked and to have an \u2018aquamarine\u2019 hat tag attached.\u00a0 Pony Club officials are able to check hats and attach a tag at events.<\/p>\n<p>In order to ensure riders are wearing the most up to date riding hats, please note that from the 1st January 2023, the following hat standards will no longer be accepted, due to the age of hats made to these standards:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>PAS 015 1998<br \/>\n2. SNELL 2001<br \/>\nTo manage this change, a new colour of hat tag will be required for all BE, PC and BRC activities from 1st January 2023.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n                                                                <\/div>\r\n        <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n\n\n\r\n\r\n<section class=\"full-width-text py-5\">\r\n    <div class=\"container\">\r\n        <div class=\"row\">\r\n            <div class=\"col-lg-10 mx-auto\">\r\n                <h2><strong>Body Protector Rules 2024<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/resources.pcuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Body-Protector-Rule.pdf\"><strong>Current Body Protector standards<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Body protectors are compulsory for all Cross Country riding and Pony Racing whether it be training or competing.<\/p>\n<p>For SJ\/Dressage rallies, if a Body Protector is worn it must meet minimum BETA 2009 Level 3 standard (purple label), preferably BETA 2018 Level 3 standard (blue and black label).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #f70a0a\"><strong>NB &#8211; for XC disciplines from 1st January 2024 only body protectors that meet BETA 2018 Level 3 Standard (Black and Blue Label) are accepted.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n                                                                <\/div>\r\n        <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n\n\n\r\n\r\n<section class=\"full-width-text py-5\">\r\n    <div class=\"container\">\r\n        <div class=\"row\">\r\n            <div class=\"col-lg-10 mx-auto\">\r\n                <h2><strong>Whip rules 2022 onwards<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Please be aware that the specifications for whips for show jumping and cross-country have changed for\u00a0<strong><em>all<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>Pony Club competitions \u2013 you can only use the same whip as for British Show jumping. An example of an acceptable whip is shown below:<\/p>\n<p>Riders may not hit their horse or pony before the start of the course and may be eliminated for doing so at the Judge\u2019s discretion.<\/p>\n<p>A whip, if carried, must be held in the hand by the handle with the handle at the top. The whip must be \u201cpadded\u201d and comply with the current British Showjumping rule (BS Members Handbook, full wording is available to view online at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britishshowjumping.co.uk\/\">www.britishshowjumping.co.uk<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Key Points:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The maximum length of the \u201cWhip\u201d is 70cm and must be no less than 45cm.<\/li>\n<li>The \u201cContact area\u201d, is considered to be two fifths of the overall length of the \u201cWhip\u201d and must be covered with a \u201cPad\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>There must be no \u201cbinding\u201d within 17 centimetres of the end of the \u201cPad\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>The \u201cPad\u201d must be smooth, with no protrusion or raised surface, and be made of shock absorbing material throughout its circumference such that it gives a compression factor of at least 6mm.<\/li>\n<li>There is to be no wording, advertising or personalisation of any kind on the \u201cPad\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Before buying any whip, please check with the retailer that it is BS compliant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At all times, the whip must only be used:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For a good reason, as an aid to encourage the horse forward.<\/li>\n<li>At an appropriate time, namely when the horse is reluctant to go forward under normal aids of seat and legs.<\/li>\n<li>In the right place, namely down the shoulder or behind the leg but never overarm.<\/li>\n<li>With appropriate severity.<\/li>\n<li>No more than twice for any one incident.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Excessive use of the whip anywhere on the showground will result in disqualification:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use of the whip to vent a competitor\u2019s anger is always excessive.<\/li>\n<li>Use of a whip which causes injury e.g. Broken skin or a weal, is always excessive.<\/li>\n<li>Use after elimination or retirement is always excessive.<\/li>\n<li>Use on a horse\u2019s head, neck etc. is always excessive.<\/li>\n<li>Using the whip from the ground after a rider fall or dismount is always excessive.<\/li>\n<li>If the rider\u2019s arm comes above the shoulder when using the whip, this is always excessive<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n                                                                <\/div>\r\n        <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n\n\n\r\n\r\n<section class=\"full-width-text py-5\">\r\n    <div class=\"container\">\r\n        <div class=\"row\">\r\n            <div class=\"col-lg-10 mx-auto\">\r\n                <h2>Tack<\/h2>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>All tack must be clean, in a good state of repair, properly fitted and suitable for purpose. Tack inspections are routinely carried out at events and the organisers may prohibit participation in the event if they consider the tack to be inadequate or unsuitable.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Humane Girths \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Humane girths are not permitted in any sport, whether during training or competition.\u00a0A humane girth is described as having non-independent straps that will loosen if one of the straps was to break.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Saddles \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>It is imperative that Saddles are in a good state of repair, properly fitted and suitable for the purpose of which they are intended. Regular checks for suitable fit can be carried out by professionals. Treeless and total contact saddles are permitted to be used for general riding to support horse and pony welfare.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n                                                                <\/div>\r\n        <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n\n\n\r\n\r\n<section class=\"full-width-text py-5\">\r\n    <div class=\"container\">\r\n        <div class=\"row\">\r\n            <div class=\"col-lg-10 mx-auto\">\r\n                <h2><strong>Stirrup rules 2022 onwards<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><em>For the avoidance of doubt, at Pony Club events.<\/em><\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<em>\u2022 stirrups which connect the boot and the stirrup magnetically are not allowed<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u2022 Interlocking boot soles and stirrup treads are not allowed<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stirrups should be of the correct size to suit the rider\u2019s boots. They must have 7mm (\u00bc\u201d) clearance on either side of the boot.<\/p>\n<p>There are now many types of stirrups marketed as \u2018safety stirrups\u2019. All riders must ensure that their stirrups are suitable for the type of footwear they are wearing and the activities in which they are taking part and that the stirrup leathers are in good condition.<\/p>\n<p>There are no prescribed weight limits on metal stirrups, however with the advent of stirrups of other materials, weight limits are seen to be given by manufacturers. Any person buying these stirrups, should take particular notice if weight limits are on the box or attached information leaflets. Neither the feet nor the stirrup leathers or irons, may be attached to the girth, or the feet attached to the stirrup irons.<\/p>\n<p>It is strongly recommended that the design of the stirrup chosen allows the foot to be released easily in the event of a rider fall. Specific rules for individual sports can be found in the respective sports rulebooks.<\/p>\n<p>Particular focus should be on ensuring that the boot and stirrup are the correct size for the rider taking part and used in line with the manufacturer\u2019s guidance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For Mounted Games Only:<\/strong><br \/>\nBostock &amp;
