The first thing you need to know is that you don’t need a specialist racing pony in order to enjoy Pony Club Pony Racing! It’s true that there are some super speedy ponies at the more advanced levels but to get involved and even to race at some of the country’s top race courses, the smallest, hairiest mount will be just fine! The important thing is that you are confident riding your pony in open spaces as fast as he or she can go.

Members wishing to take part must be aged 9 to 17 years while ponies can be up to 148cm and aged between 5 and 20 years. Races are grouped according to the ponies height and the bigger the ponies, the longer the race. For far more information about how it all works please see the Pony Club Pony Racing Rule book 2023.

Updates to this rule book for 2021 can be found at pouk.org.

The Pony Club has started a joint initiative with the Pony Racing Authority and together they run Pony Racing Training Days which are perfect if you are interested in finding out more and having a go. At these training days, experienced Pony Club Instructors teach alongside BHA accredited Jockey Coaches and provide the best possible introduction to pony racing. These days not only allow children to ride their own pony in a controlled environment and on the gallops but also provide an insight into balance and control in a forward seat with the simple use of wobble boards, space hoppers and stepping stones, running alongside the use of traditional racing equipment such as an equicisor. In addition to riding tuition, the training programme includes advice on rider and pony fitness and nutrition, tack guidance and race day procedures and etiquette. These days qualify the combination of the Pony and Rider to compete in a Pony Club or Point to Point Pony Race.

These excellent training days will be listed on our SBPC Calendar and more information can be found on the main Pony Club website from where you can click through to book. If you need any advice or pointing in the right direction please get in touch with our Racing Discipline Head (see Contact Us).
