Pony Club Championships 2017

Surrey Union Pony Club had a fantastic time at the Championships.

8 members travelled to Cholmondeley Castle to compete.  We had riders in dressage, eventing and individual showjumping.

The intermediate dressage team came an amazing 5th.  The team was made up of Katie Hale, Hatty Ford, Josh Moore and Harrison Chart.  Hatty Ford was placed 6th in her arena and Katie Hale and her lovely pony Libby came 2nd in her arena and therefore qualified for the ride off where she finished 6th.  This was a great achievement and very well done to them all.

We had a team in the novice eventing consisting of Harrison Chart, Alice Grassly, Emelye Kenyon-Brown and Grace Thompson.  The rain decided to descend on them and having all produced pleasing dressage tests – especially Harrison, they were then asking their ponies and horses to showjump in a torrential downpour with very slippery and sticky ground.  The poles were not kind to them although Alice managed to produce a lovely clear round.  Next up was the cross country where they rode brilliantly over a very demanding and technical course. However, it was not the Surrey Union’s day with a couple of uncharacteristic glance offs but the team still managed to finish 14th.  A great achievement for a team made up of new partnerships and members who had never been to the championships before. They will all have gained much experience from the weekend.
We had two members competing in the individual showjumping.  Alice Grassly in the novice where she and Hero jumped well but unfortunately had a few poles and Clarissa Burnell-Price in the intermediate.  Clarissa and Cash jumped a brilliant clear round in the 1st round and then just tipped a pole in the 2nd to finish on 4 faults – just outside the top 10.  Very well done to them both.
Many thanks should go to all the competitors, families and friends who made the weekend such an enjoyable experience and special thanks goes to Debby Winchester for travelling  all the way to Cheshire by train to support and help us all.  Not only did she watch everyone (arriving 10 seconds before Alice’s 1st showjumping round), she beautifully plaited some of the horses and gave much help and advice.  Thank you Debby for coming.  We all had a most enjoyable barbecue on the Saturday evening with over 30 SUPC representatives eating delicious meat cooked by Chris Burnell-Price and Chris Thompson.

THE PONY CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS 2016
A fun few days were spent at Cholmondeley Castle in Cheshire by members of the Surrey Union Pony Club. Katie Hale was placed 1st in her section in the Novice dressage thus qualifying for the Championships ride off where she finished 7th. Clarissa Burnell-Price, Josh Moore, George Grassly and Katie Hale competed in the Novice Showjumping and although were not placed all enjoyed the experience of jumping in full view of the Castle. Josh Moore and Katie Hale also successfully competed in the Novice eventing. An enjoyable time was spent at this prestigious championships and well done to the riders, horses, families and supporters.

National Tetrathlon Championships 2015

Very proud of Jamie Butt and Alfonso for coming 5th in the Open at the National Tetrathlon Championships this weekend. Jamie scored 960 in the shoot and had a great clear ride round a big bold XC course with plenty of questions. More importantly we had a really good time with the other Area 11 competitors. The Pony Club put on a great BBQ party & disco on the Sat night with a “Disney” theme (there is always a theme at Tet!) Jamie also got a gold award for gaining in excess of 4250 incl a 1400 ride. He was also selected ride again for England in the team competition which came 2nd. It would be lovely to see some younger ones get involved in this discipline it comes with a good social life for the older ones!  Photos below …..

PC Tetrathlon Championships 2014

Jamie Butt competed at the PC Tetrathlon Championships at Bishop Burton College Yorkshire. Jamie won the Intermediate Boys with a 94 point lead so took both the National and International titles. Jamie was second in the shoot with 920, had a clear XC ride over a beautifully built but challenging course. Jamie smashed his PB with a run of 6.46 over 2k coming in 2nd position (beaten by 1 Sec). Jamie was also part of the Area 11 team which came 5th. And in the English Team that came 2nd.

It was a fantastic week with the rest of the Area 11 competitors and they all had a great time together and at the “usual” party on the last night!

THE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2011

INDIVIDUAL OPEN LEVEL 2011

Charlotte White on Sienna came 2nd in the Pony Club National Championships Show Jumping at Open Level as an Individual!  This is a fantastic achievement!  Well Done Charlotte!

REPORT IN HORSE AND HOUND:  First up was Charlotte White, 18, of the Surrey Union riding Sienna II and what a round she produced.  It was poetry in motion until 2 fences from the end.  Fence 13 – the planks – and 14 – a spread – were introduced for the jump-off, but as Charlotte turned to the former the fence was still blocked off by the number, so she pulled away.  After a certain amount of head-scratching from the judges, Charlotte restarted after “landing” at the fence before where commentator Steve Hadley had fortunately taken a time check, but the planks fell for four faults.”

NOVICE CHAMPIONSHIP REPORT 2011

Our branch were represented at the championships in dressage by Freddie Forrest riding Russian Roulette as an individual. Freddie was last to go in her arena of 42 competitors, and in a very heavy downpour she and Rolo rode a lovely test, gaining an amazing 78.9% to finish first!! Well done Freddie, what a brilliant result, we are very proud of you and Rolo.

The eventing team were represented by Beth Riddle (Carnaval Flight), Freya Warren (Ivor), Lucy Crichton (Ballyshiel Larry), and Freddie Forrest (Russian Roulette). Everyone rode extremely well and kept their cool throughout the long day. The jumping phases were well up to height and spread with the cross country having some testing fences with many fences offering ‘learner’ options. Our girls all went for the direct route, and all galloped home with huge smiles having ridden cracking rounds. The team finally finished in 20th place out of 42 teams, with Beth Riddle finishing 7th in her arena on her brilliant dressage score of 33%. Well done Beth, a great achievement and congratulations to the team for all riding so well. A big thank you to Tracey Brown for coursewalking and warming up the team.
