What to wear

The dress code for each of the individual Sports is given in the respective Rulebooks and outlined on our individual sports pages under the activities tab. However, there are some items of dress that have safety implications. It is mandatory for members to wear a riding hat that meets our current standards which must be worn at all times when mounted.  Hats should be correctly fitting with a plain navy or black hat cover,  the chin strap fastened and tagged with the pink Pony Club hat tag. A committee member is present at all general rallies  to check and tag hats.

Body Protectors are compulsory for XC riding, Arena Eventing and Pony Racing for both training and competitions.

It is our Branch policy that all members under 10yrs also wear a Body Protector for Show Jumping. Please click on the link below to view The Pony Club Body Protector Rule

Tack

All tack must be clean, in a good state of repair, properly fitted and suitable for purpose. Tack inspections should be routinely carried out at all events and the organisers may prohibit participation in the event if they consider the tack to be inadequate or unsuitable. Individual sports do have further specific tack rules which are detailed in their individual sports rulebooks.

  • Stirrups – Stirrups should be of the correct size to suit the rider’s boots. They must have 7mm (¼”) clearance on either side of the boot. Specific guidance per sport may be applicable, please see the rulebooks for additional information.
  • Magnetic Stirrups – The Pony Club does not permit the use of magnetic stirrups, as our focus is on training and helping our Members develop independent leg control. We believe it’s important for riders to learn how to recover a lost stirrup while riding, which magnetic stirrups may not allow. Please see the Stirrup Rule for full details.
  •  Humane Girths – Humane girths can pose an increased risk, as many designs could completely fail if a single strap breaks. Therefore, they are not allowed in most Pony Club organised events, including rallies, training, or competitions. The exception is for Polo activities, where their use is permitted in accordance with HPA rules, provided a suitable over girth is also worn.
  • Saddles – It is imperative that Saddles are in a good state of repair, properly fitted and suitable for the purpose of which they are intended. Regular checks for suitable fit can be carried out by professionals. Treeless and total contact saddles are permitted to be used for general riding to support horse and pony welfare.
