Report from Julie Channon, Tetrathlon Manager – Junior Home International Tetrathlon, May 2026

Ashford Valley was brilliantly represented this weekend as Poppy and Jacob joined the Southern England Squad at the Junior Home International Tetrathlon in Warwickshire. Both riders showed exceptional commitment, talent and team spirit throughout a packed and highly competitive championship.

Day One – Shooting, Swimming & Relays

The competition opened with the shoot, where they both  delivered solid, composed performances to get the squad off to a confident start.

In the pool, the momentum continued.

  • Jacob smashed out a big personal best, a fantastic achievement at this level.
  • Poppy delivered her trademark powerhouse swim, finishing as the top Southern junior swimmer.

The afternoon brought the much‑loved but fiercely contested relay event. Both riders earned places on the four‑person Southern relay team, each taking on a 50m sprint leg. They stormed their heat to reach the final and finished a close, hard‑fought 5th, just behind an exceptionally fast Irish team.

The day wrapped up with the famous themed Dance Competition and party, always a highlight. This year’s theme was Films, and although their Men in Black routine didn’t make the podium, the squad threw themselves into the fun with full commitment.

Day Two – Running & Riding

Sunday began with a brilliant result for Jacob, who clocked another personal best in the run, placing him 3rd overall— only beaten by two of his own teammates.

Meanwhile, Poppy headed out on the big, technical, up‑to‑height cross‑country course that Jacob would next be facing. With many combinations causing problems across the field, Poppy piloted the wonderful Ronnie with real skill and composure to secure a strong, respectable score.

Poppy then moved on to her run, tackling a tough cross‑country track with determination to finish on a very creditable score.

Jacob concluded his competition riding his stunning grey pony Sam, who he navigated around the same course with true skill and had a fantastic ride successfully finishing with another excellent score!

Team Results & Final Thoughts

  • The Southern England Boys Team, including Jacob, achieved a fantastic 3rd place.
  • The Girls Team, with Poppy, were unplaced this time, but their performances remained full of grit and quality.

After a long weekend, the pair arrived home at 11.45pm, only to be up again for school at 6.30am—a true testament to their resilience, dedication, and love for their sport.

Huge congratulations to both Jacob and Poppy for representing Ashford Valley with such pride, positivity, and determination.

Thank you to their support teams and our coaches for all your hard work supporting Poppy and Jacob, we know what goes into this behind the scenes.

Lastly thank you to the Home International Organisers for running such a wonderful event.

Royal Windsor Report:
Jacob was thrilled to be selected to represent the three person Southern England Tetrathlon Team, at the Royal Windsor Horse Show!
This prestigious event is full of atmosphere and pressure. Unfortunately Jacob’s nerves got to him in the shoot and he came out feeling devastated with his score.
Thanks to amazing support from the Team Manager and his team mates, Jacob picked himself up and had a great swim, followed by a brilliant run, the 2nd fastest of the day.
After a good night’s sleep, Jacob returned on Sunday full of determination to gain as many team points as possible.
The arena was big, busy, and very atmospheric. Jacob and Sam had a good round and helped the team secure a fantastic 3rd place, behind the amazing Northern Ireland Team.
It has been a great and unique experience. Jacob and his family wish to thank all of the Southern England Team, the Area 11 Tetrathlon Committee and all at Ashford Valley Pony club, for giving Jacob this opportunity and their continued support!

Ashford Valley Tetrathlon Competition – Weekend Report

Another fantastic Ashford Valley Tetrathlon competition on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th April, kicking off on Saturday with the riding phase at Petley Wood. Sharon had cleverly organised the ride to run alongside an Arena Eventing competition, helping to make the event viable while also encouraging a brilliant number of entries.

This format allowed us to offer novice classes alongside the more challenging Tet heights, which can become quite demanding once riders reach mini level and above. The decision proved hugely successful, with over 90 entries ranging from cross poles right up to 1m — a wonderful turnout and a great atmosphere throughout the day.

On Sunday we reconvened at our familiar and much‑loved venue, Sutton Valence School, for the run, shoot, and swim phases. As always, AV athletes performed superbly, and it was especially lovely to welcome so many new faces from other Area 11 branches.

We also continued to offer our increasingly popular Triathlon classes, giving those without a suitable ride — for any reason — the chance to take part and enjoy the fun.

Results & Highlights

  • In the Intermediate Triathlon, Flo delivered a strong all‑round performance to finish 2nd.
  • In the Junior classes, Jacob and Poppy both took 1st place in the boys’ and girls’ sections, each producing lovely clear rides.
  • Lilly won the Tri section with a determined and consistent performance across all phases.
  • Thomas was 2nd in the Mini Boys Tetrathlon, showing continued improvement, particularly in his run.
  • Immy jumped a fantastic clear round in the Mini Novice section to finish 2nd.
  • Jasmine placed 4th in a competitive Tri class, boosted by a great shoot score.

Encouraging Our Younger Members

We would love to see even more of our younger members giving tetrathlon a try. It’s enormous fun, very accessible in the lower classes, and with Triathlon sections available, even non‑riding siblings can get involved. It’s a brilliant way to build confidence, fitness, and friendships.

Thank You

A huge thank you to everyone who helped across the weekend — these events simply wouldn’t happen without you.

Special thanks go to Darren and Melanie, who put in countless hours handling all the admin behind the scenes. We are also very grateful to those from other branches who stepped in to lane judge, and to former member Daisy, who did a fantastic job scoring throughout the day.

Easter Weekend Ashford Valley Run Event: Tetrathlon and Triathlon on Good Friday & Saturday attracting just enough entries from across the area and beyond to provide a bit of healthy competition in all classes.

We started with the Triathlon phases at Sutton Valence School on Friday and then for those opting to complete the full Tetrathlon we moved over to Breech Barn in the beautiful Elham valley for Arena Eventing.

Matilda was taking part in her first full Tet and did brilliantly winning the run, the swim and going clear in the ride to win the Beanies section.

Cousin Rupert did spectacularly well, executing another clear ride and good all round performance in the other phases to take 3rd place.

Eloise was rather tired after her efforts on the Friday so decided not to ride but still got a 5th place rosette, well done!

Immy , completely new to tetrathlon and triathlon, took a very well deserved 2nd place rosette in the Mini girls section after riding a superb clear on Snowie. Rumour has it that she’s caught the Tet bug so we will be seeing more of her!

Hattie wasn’t too far behind in 3rd place after a rather frustrating ride on cheeky Bojangles who, when going back in after the competition executed a perfect round! Ponies!

Tilly, another of our first timers did brilliantly, just rolling a pole in an otherwise superb round and putting in solid scores in all the other phases to end up in 3 rd place.

Thomas was second in the Mini boys after sensibly jumping down and producing a lovely clear round on his beautiful new pony; Mini. Thomas was also part of the official arena party for the entire day!

Poppy Lovejoy also joined us for the first time and started with a very creditable 740 shoot. She also opted to jump down and again, this paid off when she achieved a great clear round . She finished in third place and we definitely think she is another Tet convert!

Poppy Polding, one of our seasoned athletes, achieved her customary win in the junior girls class winning both the shoot and swim and riding a great clear round. Excellent!

Flo was very pleased with her clear round in the intermediate girls class, she also had best run & swim to take first place.

Zoe competed as a Triathlete and after winning best shoot , she also won the class.

Jacob, also competing in the Tri had a very convincing win, taking both the best run and the best swim rosettes. Jacob was also part of our busy arena party on the Saturday.

Lilly had a great shoot , a solid swim and just one unlucky pole down to secure 3 rd place. Great work Lilly!

Thank you to all of those who put in their time on the run up and on the competition days. Tet does require a huge team effort to run so we couldn’t do it without our helpers from AV , EK and RM branches as well as grandparents and siblings.

Congratulations to Thomas, Poppy and Jacob who competed at the National Triathlon Championships in Grantham on Sunday. Having spent the winter training and qualifying, the pressure was on, and the competition was outstanding. Thomas, who is still new to national competitions, had a great all round performance in the Mini Boys class. He started the day well with a big PB run of 4.06 before coping well in the intimidating shooting. He finished his day with a great swim, and a big smile, making Ashford Valley very proud.
Poppy and Jacob contested the Junior girl and Boy classes, and both had hopes of top 10 placings.
Jacob ran a PB, with an impression 4.57, the 3rd fastest time of the day. He struggled with his nerves in the shoot, and a modest 800 looked like a top 10 placing had gone. But he gave everything he had in the swim gaining a PB by 6 metres, to secure a brilliant 10th place individual rosette.
Poppy, who has worked so hard on her run, also has an impressive PB of 5.49. She then held her nerves in the shoot, to score a huge 980, to jointly win this phase. Poppy’s swim may have looked effortless, but she gave her all for another brilliant PB of 9L17M to finish an amazing 4th Individually.
Poppy and Jacob were also part of the Area 11 team, and their outstanding performances help the team to secure a great 10th place. The standard at these finals are phenomenal, and Ashford Valley is so proud of all three of you, huge congratulations!!

Well done to everyone who competed in the Tetrathlon and Triathlon at the weekend! Ashford Valley Members achieved 3 wins and two 2nd places along with lots of Best rosettes

Four athletes from Ashford Valley attended the first Tetrathlon of the season hosted by OSB at Felbridge and Copthorne school this weekend.

Thomas’s ride didn’t quite go to plan on Saturday but despite retiring he was ready to go today, putting in a fantastic PB run and swim . All this done with a huge smile to collect the 3rd place rosette in the mini boys class. Well done Thomas! Great perseverance!

Poppy had a lovely round on her young pony, just having one pole leaving her in second place overnight. However, with a winning 980 shoot, best run and swim she ended up with a well deserved first place in the junior girls class. Fantastic performance Poppy!

Jacob and Sam produced a lovely clear round on Saturday and consolidated their performance with Jacob winning both the shoot and the swim as well as having a great PB run to win the junior boys class convincingly. Excellent!

Florence flew round rather enthusiastically in her first attempt at intermediate level. She did leave 3 poles on the floor and then had to endure a gun malfunction. After borrowing a right handed gun from another competitor ( she’s left handed!) she declared herself happy under the circumstances with her 400 shoot! She went on to win the run & swim and pick up second place. A great comeback!

All in all a fabulous weekend, thank you OSB ! You even organised the sunshine!

Thank you to The Old Surrey & Burstow Pony Club for hosting such a wonderful event.

It was a rainy start to the day at the RMPC Triathlon, but as the day progressed the weather improved considerably and we even had some sunshine!
As usual all the AV athletes put in maximum effort to produce some great results.
Jasmine had a very solid all round performance to come 13th in a large Tadpole girls class, well done!
Zoe scored a perfect 1000 in the Mini girls shoot to win the class and Eloise ,who is from Ridge Farm but we like to think of her as one of us as she trains with AV, had an amazing winning run to finish 4th.
In the Mini boys section Thomas had a solid score in every phase to come 4th .
Poppy and Lilly found themselves in a competitive Junior girls class but they both did us proud coming 1st  and 4th respectively with Poppy winning both the run and the swim.
Jacob had a clean sweep in the Junior boys section with great run & swim scores.
Flo was pleased with her winning shoot and swim which put her in first place in the intermediate girls class.
Thank you to Romney Marsh for hosting a great day of competition.

2025 Tetrathlon and Triathlon Results

Ashford Valley Pony Club Autumn Triathlon at Sutton Valence.

9th November 2025
We were pleased to be hosting a winter triathlon at Sutton Vallence School earlier this month.
Our own athletes represented us across most of the classes and they really did us proud!
In the Beanies section, Annabel did brilliantly to finish in 6th place at her first ever Tri!
Aidan had a great run with 5th place and swim to finish in 12th place in a very competitive Tadpole boys class.
The girls section was also well attended and Imogen had a great swim to take 10 th place.
In the Mini boys class Thomas was just pipped into 3rd place after winning both the shoot and the swim.
Zoe had a convincing win in the girls section with a winning 980 shoot and a great best swim which should stand her in good stead when she moves up to Juniors!
First timer Sophia also had a fantastic shoot & solid all round score to finish 4th in that class.
Jacob had an impressive clean sweep in the junior boys including a great 5.21 run 💪
Poppy did equally well across all of the phases to head up the girls section.
Lilly had joint best shoot with Poppy and a great swim to finish 3rd 🫶
Flo won the run & the swim to just secure the win in the open girls class. 🥰
Well done to all of our athletes and to the parents and volunteers who all helped to make the day so enjoyable. This event was part of the Area 11 Winter Triathlon League in which our athletes are currently looking very strong.

August 2025 JCB Tetrathlon Championships:

Poppy , Jacob & Flo made the journey to Offchurch Bury in Warwickshire for the JCB Tetrathlon Championships. Poppy & Jacob were competing as juniors in an area team & Flo as an intermediate also in an area team.
All had a fantastic time starting with the shoot & swim on the Friday and the ride over a very testing course on the Saturday.
Saturday night was also party night and a great time was had by all!
Sunday morning saw a rather gruelling run over the cross country course , through the water jump. Fantastic performances from all three of our competitors with the junior team narrowly missing out on a podium place and the intermediate team finishing in 7th place.
Thanks must go to the Pony Club Tetrathlon committee for putting on such an amazing and well run event. We all headed home tired but happy and already looking forward to next season.

12th and 13th July 2025 – MUNSTEAD Tetrathlon and Triathlon:
A fantastic weekend for Ashford Valley athletes at area Tetrathlon this weekend
Flo, Jacob & Poppy traveled to Munstead hosted by Area 13 for their ride on Saturday.
Despite the very hot weather, all three had really good rounds with Jacob & Flo going clear.
On the Sunday we went back to Surrey, this time to the beautiful MSPC field at Walton on the Hill. We were joined by Zoe, Thomas & Lilly who for various reasons were competing as Triathletes.
Flo was very happy with her first place in the intermediate girls class with a clean sweep in all phases as well as her Championship qualification.
Poppy had a similarly successful day although she had a little more competition than usual but no matter, she still won the class and her ticket to Champs.
Jacob as usual had to really stretch himself in a super competitive boys class to pick up a well earned 3rd place along with his qualification.
Lilly had a fabulous PB swim which she was delighted with in the junior Tri.
In the Mini Tri , Zoe had best shoot to win the class while Thomas had a great all round performance to take fourth place.
Well done to all and thank you to area 13 for letting us ride at your qualifier and to MSPC for hosting the Tri & non qualifying classes.
The Pony Club Championships in Warwickshire:
Ashford Valley Junior Girls Team, consisting of Poppy, Millie and Florence made the journey up to Offchurch -Bury in Warwickshire for a fabulous three days of competition at the Pony Club Championships.
After settling the horses and ponies into their stables the girls had the opportunity to have a practice shoot in the big marquee , very helpful as it’s quite pressured with very large details compared to interbranch and area competitions.
Friday morning saw us all up bright and early to sort out ponies before the shoot. Poppy scored a solid 900, with Flo on 800 and Millie not far behind on 740.
Next; the swim. We travelled to nearby Leamington Spa where , once again the girls all did really well, with Millie on 6L 11m , Flo on 7L 17 and Poppy on 8L 7. At this level some of the athletes manage nearly 10 lengths but distances can vary from 5 lengths upward for some first year juniors.
The weather was being kind to us, thankfully, as some of us were sleeping under canvas and the going was looking good for the ride next day.
Millie was the first of our girls to start round the challenging course that was both technical and up to height. There are always quite a few L fences to ensure that everyone has a good chance of completing their round safely and Millie wisely took this option several times to ensure that she and lovely Larry came home smiling. Poppy was very pleased with her round, especially as she had Florence following hot on her heels! Flo and Leo flew round clear and well within the time, this being her third time around the junior champs course, so lots of experience under her belt.
At any big Tet competition there will always be the 5th discipline AKA the Party, of course, I am not allowed to report on that part of the proceedings at all but let’s just say;, a great time was had by all!
Sunday morning saw an early start for the run and for the first time everyone was to run with chips to record their times. Well, anyone who knows me will also know that technology and I are not friends, so of course I advised everyone and anyone who would listen, to time their child . This strategy paid off as initially Flo was given an 11 minute time , which even allowing for over- consumption of fizzy lemonade at the party was a personal worst by a long way! The course was a proper cross country run taking the competitors up and down some steep hills and through the water jump. All three girls gave it their all with Poppy on 7.49, Millie on 7.57 and Flo on a rectified score of 6.54.
We were all keen to get packed up and on the road but Flo was happy to stay with the rest of the area 11 gang and collect her lovely 1400 ride rosette as well as the team ninth rosettes which was a lovely surprise.
Eridge Pony Club Triathlon competition at Crowborough leisure centre ably assisted by the Ashford Valley Tet team.
This was the first competition in the newly re established Tri League.
Ollie represented us in the Beanie class ,throwing a fabulous 520 in the bean bags and finishing 7th.
Hattie had her first attempt at shooting competitively with a very creditable 500 in the tadpole girls class to finish 5th, well done!
Zoe had a fantastic day , winning the shoot with 940, the run on 4.09 and the swim with 4 L 6m and an overall win in the mini girls section.
Thomas also had a great all round performance to take 2nd place in the boys section.
Poppy and Lilly were the only contenders in the junior girls class and both of them shot a brilliant 940, Poppy edged ahead with a great PB run and both girls had a strong swim.
Jacob found himself in a very competitive junior boys class , shooting joint best with a great sub 6 minute run and a strong swim to take 2nd place.
Flo was competing for the first time as an intermediate girl and having to shoot from 10 meters for the first time. She finished 2nd in what turned out to be one of the biggest classes of the day.
Well done everyone, our own Triathlon will be on October 20th at Sutton Valence School. We hope to see as many of you as possible there. For more information,  don’t hesitate contact me :Julie Channon Team Manager.
Horseheath Area Tetrathlon weekend:
A great weekend was had by all at Horseheath, Forence and Millie have qualified for PC Championships.  Lilly won best shoot and Poppy best swim.  On the Saturday Jacob and Zoe both came 2nd in the Triathlon with Zoe shooting a perfect 1000!

OSB Tetrathlon 2nd and 3rd March 2024:

A sunny but rather chilly Sunday saw Jacob , Florence, Poppy and Zoe up in Grantham for the Triathlon Final.

All had done extremely well to qualify and experience a big competition against all of the very best athletes from around the UK.

First up for the Junior run was Jacob who really went for it with a superb run in 5m 41s on the track .

Poppy also put in lots of effort for her least favourite discipline followed by Flo who left the rest of her heat for dust with a great sub 6 minute time.

Next up for the juniors was the swim ,where both Poppy & Flo managed PBs . Jacob also had a good competitive performance.

Meanwhile, Zoe was starting in the mini class with the shoot, putting in a fabulous 840 score in her first championship competition. She also had a good run and decent swim showing great promise for future competitions.

The juniors finished with their shoot where Jacob shot a solid 800 and Poppy scored a fantastic 940 . Florence was a little disappointed with her 680 but this is the phase that she finds most challenging, just got to keep practicing!

All in all , a great experience and everyone deserves a massive pat on the back ( including parents !) although not in the placings this time, some lovely memories to take home.

ASHFORD VALLEY YOU’VE DONE US PROUD! 18th February 2025:

We’ve had some big weekend achievements that we wish to shout about…more will follow tomorrow as Ashford Valley you are on fire at the moment 🔥💪.

Let’s start with the Tetrathlon Report from our Team Manager Julie Channon:

“Ashford Valley had a fabulous day at the Area Triathlon held at Cumnor House School on Saturday.

⭐️Oliver did a fantastic job in the Beanies section; winning the throw on 800 and coming 3 rd overall.

⭐️Sister Zoe put in a great all round performance coming 3rd in the mini girls but as 2nd area 11 girl , she has qualified for the winter Tri final again!

⭐️Thomas also had a solid performance seeing him finish 4th , but again, he is off to the final as the qualification was passed down to him – fantastic!

⭐️Poppy had a clean sweep in the junior girls: best run, shoot & swim to win and pick up her qualification. All that commitment is really paying off now!

⭐️Lilly will be keeping her company at the final as she was 2nd area 11 girl coming 3 rd overall.

⭐️Jacob had to work supremely hard for second place in the fiercely competitive junior boys section, he’s also off to the National Triathlon Finals in March. Having previously qualified out of area so passing his qualification down to the 3rd place boy. Jacob also won the Area 11 League competition for the boys, a real achievement! 🙌

⭐️Flo just missed winning the intermediate girls league by 2 points- so close!

⭐️Poppy won the junior girls league with Lilly not too far behind her for second place and Zoe took the mini girls league.

In the mini boys; Thomas was 3rd and Oliver was also 3rd in the Beanies league. 💪

All these achievements are testament to the dedication and commitment of our AV athletes (and their grownups!) who turned out all winter in sometimes quite miserable conditions to competitions and training.

A big well done all of you!

BIG NEWS!!

Romney Marsh Triathlon 25th January 2025:

Ashford Valley had a hardy bunch of athletes competing at Romney Marsh today.

Flo was our only intermediate and unfortunately she had a poor start in the shoot which despite a winning run and good swim meant she finished in 5 th place.

In the juniors we had Poppy and Lilly representing us in the girls section and Jacob in the boys.

Poppy won with a good shoot & superb swim with Lilly in 4th with a very respectable shoot and another great swim.

Jacob had to work very hard in an increasingly competitive boys section , he ran brilliantly and had an amazing PB swim to finish 3rd.

Meanwhile our Minis did us proud with Zoe shooting her 2 nd competitive 1000 to win the girls section and Thomas putting in a great all round performance to take 3 rd in the boys.

Oliver was our lone Beanie today but worked really hard to finish 6th.

Great results all round on such a horrible day weather wise.

Thanks to Romney Marsh Pony Club Events for putting on a lovely competition and hopefully we will see everyone at the final one in the area 11 league : the Area Qualifier to be hosted by OSB.
