Pony racing gives young riders a fantastic opportunity to experience the thrill of a lifetime – either point-to-point (P2P) pony racing, at a Pony Club Race Day, or competing in the Charles Owen Racecourse Series on professional racetracks.
We are lucky in the Cotswold Vale to have a wealth of knowledge within the club, with the children of racing trainer families as members, and horse racing being one of our DC’s passions! Several members are now riding professionally, having graduated from pony racing. In 2016, Jamie Spencer was crowned West Midlands point-to-point pony racing champion in the 138cm & under category.
Pony racing is governed by the Pony Racing Authority – for P2P pony racing and the Charles Owen Racecourse Series – and Pony Club Race Days are governed by the Pony Club under separate rules. All pony races are over the ‘flat’ – there are no jumps! Height certificates, vaccination records and passports are needed for all races, and there are strict rules on permitted tack.
Pony racing is open to all members aged between 9 and 15, and ponies must by 148cm or under. As a minimum, members must have attended at least 4 working rallies to be able to race, and all entry forms must be countersigned by either of our DCs, Chris Dee or Jane Haslum. To race in P2P pony races or in the Charles Owen Racecourse Series, riders and ponies must be registered with the Pony Racing Authority, and approved as a combination to race.
It’s highly recommended that all riders take part in race training, with training days organised jointly by the PRA/PC. P2P pony races are held all over the country from February to June, with the Charles Owen Racecourse Series running from April to October. Pony Club Race Days take place between May to October.
On the plus side, riders can choose their own racing colours!
