The Pony Club team relay competition, kindly hosted by Cheshire Hunt South branch, is a popular and exciting competition between Pony Club branches from across the area to test the skills, accuracy and teamwork of participating teams. It takes place in the main arena at the Royal Cheshire Show, and has been an exciting event in our branch calendar for many decades.
The competition involves branch teams of four tackling a looped course of obstacles, typically consisting of rustic jumps to 80cm and a short line of bending poles. The two drawn teams start simultaneously, passing a baton between team members within a marked changeover zone. Penalties for knocking down obstacles add to the total time and the fastest team, once penalties have been added, go forward to the next round in a knock-out style competition.
We are looking for this yearโs team of four to compete on behalf of East Cheshire (we are sometimes invited to bring a second team, depending on entries, so there may be an opportunity for two teams if oversubscribed).

If you have not seen the relay in action in previous years, please note that the experience is very exciting and involves jumping in a popular main arena with spectators watching and cheering. There is no access to any practice jumps or course walk, and the route to the main arena usually alongside fair ground rides. Whilst the event aims to provide a popular main arena attraction for spectators and a fun experience for our members taking part, it also provides a chance to showcase the standard and talent in Pony Clubs across the area. As a branch, we want to maintain this so our priority is to recruit combinations capable of coping with the exciting atmosphere and upholding the high standards of The Pony Club and East Cheshireโs outstanding reputation in tack & turnout and sportsmanship. The tack and turnout competition is an important part of the tradition and experience and ponies will need to be fully plaited and immaculately turned-out with tack and dress as detailed in the rules. Members must wear a suitable tweed jacket to continue tradition so you will need to source one ahead of time if you do not own one.
Recommended minimum age for members is high-school age up to and including current members aged 25 years and members must be confidently jumping 80cm.
Arrival at show for approx. 1.30-2pm, with view to riding in main arena approx. 4.30-5pm (could be later dependent on show progress)
