Junior Camp

Essex Union Hunt Pony Club
Junior Camp 2020
Weds 27th May to Fri 29th May 2020 inclusive  – WE HAD TO DUE TO COVID-19 WE HAVE TAKEN THE DECISION FOLLOWING GUIDELINES FROM PC HQ TO UNFORTUNATELY CANCEL

At Downhouse Farm, by kind permission of Mr & Mrs A Barr

All EUHPC’s younger members aged 5 and over (as at Jan 1st) are invited to join us for Junior Camp this year – we have been hard at work with some new initiatives!

Junior Camp is all about having fun and your child gaining confidence with their pony – not to mention the incredible friendships they will make!

It also serves as an excellent transition for those considering Senior Camp later in the year – as a Branch, we want to encourage as many learning opportunities for our members as possible – for those considering Senior Camp, there is certainly no requirement to choose either Junior Camp, or Senior Camp – you can do both! If you are uncertain, please do get in touch and we would be delighted to try and help – our overriding objective is that your children have a wonderful time with their ponies, as often as possible.

COST

Through careful negotiation and some very generous support, we are once again very pleased to confirm that we have been able to keep the cost of Junior Camp the same as last year, at £125 per child.

We are sure those that have been before will agree is excellent value for money and includes their food for the three days and a variety of special prizes! The Branch continues to benefit from a number of highly qualified and enthusiastic instructors, ensuring that all riders, ponies and families benefit from an educational and fun experience at Junior Camp.

AGES

We invite members aged 5 and over as at 01 January 2020 to join us at Junior Camp. We hope you will understand that we are unable to accommodate any children under the age of 5 since instructing such youngsters can prove difficult and compromise the tuition available to others. It also becomes extremely tiring for all, especially by day 3 when they are completely exhausted!

THEME

The theme for this year will be “The Circus”.

All Junior Campers are invited to attend in fancy dress on the first day – in recognition of the tremendous effort you all put into this, and after the success last year, we will continue to run it as a competition with the best costume in each ride earning points for their team.

TIMINGS

Each day will begin PROMPTLY at 8.30am with a briefing and finish at approximately 4pm with a break for lunch. A more detailed timetable for each day will be circulated in advance and also posted on the day – in outline, it will include a minimum of two mounted sessions each day, together with unmounted instruction with children working towards their next Pony Club Tests and achievement badges.

LUNCH

We will be providing a BBQ style lunch cooked on site each day with a range of salads and desserts, and there will also be snacks and drinks made available during breaks throughout the day, included within the cost of Junior Camp.

A charge of £6 per day is requested for any additional adults or children who are not riding but would like to join in which we hope will mean that you and your family can be well catered for during the entire Camp! This will include bacon butties for anyone in need of a boost on arrival at Downhouse each morning!

REQUIREMENTS

Ponies will need to be physically fit and well shod or with feet trimmed.

Tack and turnout is in accordance with that which is required for all pony club rallies. We strongly discourage bling on rider or ponies and kindly remind you that all riders must be in hair nets and have any jewellery including earrings removed for their own safety.

Out of courtesy to our instructors, we politely request that ponies and riders are smart, clean and tidy each day, but there is no need to plait.

As with any pony club event, parents need to be vigilant with their children and siblings at all times, both mounted and unmounted. At least one named adult must be available at all times throughout the period of attendance at Junior Camp. During the periods of unmounted instruction, and during lunch, ponies will also need to be attended and secured to a horse box or trailer which is attached to its pulling vehicle.

For health and safety reasons please can you ensure that your dogs are on a lead at all times and / or restricted to your vehicle.

VACCINATIONS

In line with current Pony Club Rules, all ponies & horses attending camp are required to have had an annual vaccination, the most recent of which MUST have been given in the 6 months prior to camp.

Please check your vaccination records. Anyone whose pony or horse has been following a regular programme of annual vaccinations, if the last vaccination was on or before 02 December 2019, you will need a further vaccination before being able to attend camp. If your injections have lapsed altogether (so the last injection was more than 12 months ago), it takes a month to be compliant again as you need two injections a minimum of 21 days apart and you cannot then compete for a further 7 days – please discuss with your vet.

LOGISTICS

Junior Camp is a non-residential adventure – there will be no stables available to accommodate ponies overnight, and please ensure that you bring enough shade, food and water for your ponies. In recent years, we have experienced the full range of weather from scorching arid temperatures to monsoon rains – so please come prepared for all eventualities.

*NEW FOR THIS YEAR* following a number of requests, and because three days of fun just isn’t enough, we have decided to offer overnight camping to our Junior Campers on the last night, Thursday 28th May. This is just for the members attending Junior Camp – we can’t accommodate either parents or siblings unfortunately.

Those Junior Campers wishing to participate (and there is absolutely no obligation to do so) should bring with them a sleeping bag, pillow and small overnight bag, to include clean riding clothes for Friday (no electronic devices please). It is intended that all children will sleep together in one of the marquees, on raised flooring with the Junior Camp Committee present. We invite parents to take ponies home at the end of the day on Thursday and return them ready for riding at 0830 on Friday morning.

We are not proposing to charge anything for this exciting new adventure – but we will be asking all those leaving their children in our care to please provide money for a fish and chip supper which we shall go out and get for everyone.

At this stage, all we ask for at the time of booking, is that you let us know if your child / children will be staying with us, so that we can make the necessary arrangements. Further details will then be provided nearer the time.

HOW TO BOOK

So…..now you know the plans, how do you sign up? We are making the final tweaks to enable bookings to be made online once again on the What’s On tab – so keep an eye out for it going live very soon.

To help us with the planning and to ensure the children get the most from camp, please enter before 2nd May – it may not be possible to accept requests for places received after this date, although we will be happy to keep a list of late applications and set up a waiting list on a first come, first served basis.

So that rides can be grouped appropriately, attendees are required to attend a minimum of three rallies, prior to Junior Camp – a full Spring programme is under preparation, so please keep an eye out, get booked on and have fun making friendships that could last a lifetime!

PLEASE REMEMBER your vaccinations must be up to date for each and every rally that you attend (as above, the last vaccination must have been given in the 6 months prior to the rally) and you must also be a current member.

HELP!

Finally, Junior Camp is supported by a fantastic committee, but we really do need EVERYONE to help in setting up and clearing away. There will be a working party at Downhouse on Tuesday 26th May and we would REALLY appreciate your help, even if just for an hour or so. In simple terms, YOUR help, benefits YOUR children – it really does!

We really hope that you will be able to join us and be part of another wonderful EUHPC experience in 2020 – if you do have any queries, or if you would like to volunteer and support in any way at all, please do get in touch!

That’s all from us for now…….. we hope to see you soon!
