DC’s Camp Report

If it takes a village to raise a children it requires an army to organise camp.

Thank you to your families for producing such lovely children and ponies, for your work in the run up to camp, during camp and helping now to dismantle our village. The overnight helpers should always have a special mention as this is an exhausting and hugely appreciated task. Thank you to all the brilliant coaches, the helpers, the camp and wider pony club committee. The camp committee led by Gemma Issott have worked like Trojans over the past few months.  Laura, Jackie and Nicola formed a great team in the kitchen and Nicola provided speedy first aid and hugs on tap. Thank you to Juliet Laing and Nigel Tully for providing their pools and to David and Charlie Deacon for constructing the first and most epic Flamstead PC farmers pool. Thank you to Josh Costa Sa for hay, the muck trailer for ferrying the muck. Thank you to Steve Heath and Wadsworth loos for their diligent muck out. Thank you to farrier Henry Chitty, equine physio Heather, Chloe Campbell equine behaviourist, Nat Reynolds and Donna for the team building and Jules Hooper for running Georgie Dalton’s quiz. The BBQ was tremendous, brilliantly organised and coordinated by Juliet Laing.

Of all the camps this has been my favourite

The sun has shone, we’ve kept you cool, your children kept me cool – mostly by chasing me when wet and luring me into the farmers pool. Camp had the loveliest atmosphere at all times, the best mix of kids, best helpers, coaches, and families.  Many campers rode on borrowed ponies and we were all so impressed with their riding and resilience.  The competitions run this week have been a huge success. We have had surprise dressage ride winners, the arena eventing ride and bike was a blast, the show jumping and XC rounds were really well ridden. It was lovely to see some of our kids who have experienced ponies napping at regional and area competitions have the opportunity to work through these issues in a very supportive competition atmosphere. More of these low-pressure rounds would be wonderful to hold in the future.

When awarding prizes for main, junior and day campers it has been so hard to distinguish. I have seen the best demonstrations of friendship and support. The tack room leaders across the board have been the most supportive I have seen in my 3 years at camp. They have hosted wonderful meet ups, really looked out for the younger children. I’ve seen water buckets carried between children, hay nets filled together, ponies leant to each other – even to one of our helpers so she could do her road rider test!

This is everything I could have wished for and more. I am so proud to have been your DC for 3 years – the prize giving at the end of camp was the last time I will see most of you in this capacity. Few people have the chance to provide this much fun and development for young people and I will always treasure this opportunity. It has been an honour; thank you for entrusting me with this amazing job.

Ride Prizes

Red Ride – Sasha Tindall – rode maturely, sensitively and stylishly, borrowed her sister’s horse

Blue Ride – Becky Thomas – first time at Flamstead camp, having the disappointment of not bringing her own pony, has enjoyed the full camp experience on Wally and has had some wonderful results

Yellow Ride – Flora MacFarlane – an absolute trooper, managed Elvis sensibly, maturely and polite with her pony

Orange Ride – Leo Reynolds – looking after everyone else alongside coping with his own pony, all delightful to teach

Green Ride – John Grimston – huge improvement in his riding on the flat and jumping. Away from home, not able to ride as much and on a new pony. Time-keeping could be improved for next year. All lessons around the pool would work well!

Black Ride – Thea Gentry – a pleasure to teach, first year at Flamstead camp and has really impressed all her coaches.

White Ride – Zach Afolami – flying on his new and so brave. He has surprised himself but no-one else by how well his riding has gone. Seems really happy and attentive.

Purple Ride – Mya Mulligan – Also her first Flamstead camp – rode this lovely young horse she was borrowing so carefully and thoughtfully.
