Good Luck

Congratulations to our members who competed at the area show jumping held at Radfords last weekend.

It’s a busy weekend coming up ….

  • Good luck to our members who will be competing at the Area 5 dressage at Somerford on Saturday.
  • It’s also the area Horse and Pony care competition. We have teams competing in the mini and the junior sections. Good luck.
  • The minimus Tetrathlon competition is being held over two days in Breckenborough near Thirsk. Good luck to all our minimus competitors.
  • The Area Horse Trials are being held on 5th July at Kelsall. Volunteers for stewarding or fence judging are still needed. If anyone is available please let Bethan know. No need for experience as there will be a briefing for everyone. Great day out.

UK Pony Club travel to Irish Minimus Tetrathlon Championships

Last weekend, Zoe J and Catrin M and their families travelled to Clonshire Equestrian Centre near Adare, County Limerick to compete at the Irish Pony Club’s Minimus Tetrathlon Championships. We set off early on the Thursday morning to meet the rest of the UK competitors at Holyhead. It was very exciting boarding the ferry with the horses, luckily there was safety in numbers and Catrin and Zoe soon met up with their fellow Wales and Borders team members (all from Area 5 this time) and the England team members in the truckers lounge on board the ship and swiftly disappeared with their new friends.

We had a smooth journey, the horses all settled in their stables for the weekend at the County Limerick hunt stables and we set up camp in the rain and headed down to a local pub for dinner.

The competition started the next day with the hole punching competition! Irish pony club’s don’t introduce this phase until the Junior age group but the international competitors went ahead with it. It was a slightly different format to our competition here and had a more relaxed atmosphere. All UK competitors did well but Catrin exceeded all expectations and got the perfect score of 1000. She was closely followed by Zoe with 940.

The next day was the ride phase. The parents spent Friday night and Saturday morning questioning their choices as the course was enormous and technical. Five foot drops and deep ditches as well as technical combinations. There were numerous two and three part combinations and most were up to height. All the fences had a Learner option so there was a chance they could get around. The girls were brave and confident and set out with the intention to get around and be competitive. They both came through the finish elated with their ponies having jumped clear Catrin with one Learner and Zoe with four.

That evening was the bucking bronco competition with children and adults taking part including GOAT jockey and fellow Pony Club parent Ruby Walsh!

The final day was the swim and run. Both pulled out all the stops again with Zoe achieving the best run for the girls. Overall Catrin was 6th and Zoe 8th and their Wales and Borders (Area 5) team was 4th in the international competition. We all celebrated together with another pub meal before another even earlier start to get the ferry back on Monday morning from Dublin.

It was an unforgettable weekend with fantastic people. Tetrathlon is a unique sport in Pony Club and the opportunity it gave the children and their parents over in Ireland was well worth it. I would urge anyone thinking about it next year to go for it.

Area Show Jumping – Results

The Area SJ took place on Saturday at Radfords. It was a great day for our members, who all rode well and got great results. It was a lovely day with plenty of time to sit in the sun and chat between rounds. All our 70 and 80cm riders have qualified for the grassroots champs at Kelsall at the end of August, and our older members are off to the Pony Club champs mid-August. It’s great that we have so many members at all levels. Thank you to all who represented F&D, and I am sure you will all have a great time at the champs.
