Equine Flu Guidance
Email sent to all parents 11th June 2026
Dear Parents
I sent an email on the 19th May, re the outbreak of Equine influenza and guidelines from Head quarters.
THERE HAS BEEN NO CHANGE IN THE PONY CLUB’S STATUS ON THIS.
But as we are very near to a High Risk Area, (many un-vaccinated ponies on the New Forest are carrying the disease.) It is only sensible to ask our members to have the best Vaccination cover for thier ponies.
If your ponies Vaccination is due in the next 3-4 months. Talk to your vet about getting them a Booster. This will give them the best cover if they come into contact with the Virus (it can be carried in the air up to 5km).
If they are not vaccinated or it has lapsed, you can start them now. Then they will have cover before the Summer Holidays start.
If all ponies are well covered with a Booster within the last 6-8 month. There should not be a problem with Summer Competition, Camps etc.. But the situation could change quickly.
We have always required Ponies to be vaccinated to attend camps, this year you will realise why. The last outbreak in 2019, all BE, BSJA, BD and Pony Club Championships, along with many competition venues required 6 monthly vaccination, this meant activites could continue.
Don’t forget to vaccinate the old and young horses that never leave the yard.
Please check your pony’s passport now.
See the attached poster for for signs of Equine Flu.
Temperature is a very good sign, see video if you don’t know how to take your ponies Temp. How to take your ponies temp
