March 2016

Dear Members,

Included in this Newsletter is the Easter programme, and a schedule for the Branch Team Show Jumping Competition to be held in Escrick Park on 2 May, which will include classes for the Junior Series. We hope as many of you as possible will enter as it provides good experience and training for Show Jumping competitions that will be running through the summer both at Area level and those run by other Branches, as well as being a fund raiser for the Branch. Information about Camp (31 July-5 August) and Mini-Camp (9,10,11 August) will follow. Camp is residential, for those members 11 years and over who are able to muck out, feed and tack up their pony by themselves – help is there, but you should be able to do most things yourself! Mini-Camp is non-residential for members 11 years and under – therefore 11 year olds have a choice of which to attend. All horses attending Camp at Askham Bryan must be vaccinated and confirmation of this has to be shown to Becci when sending in your balance in late June. If they do not comply, they will not be allowed to stay, necessitating daily travel! Any queries about Camp attendance or vaccinations, please speak to Gill, or Becci.

A big thank you to all those who helped out at the Branch Dressage Competition on 30 January. We had a huge entry in all classes. Particular well done to our younger members who entered Class 1 – the first time doing a Dressage competition for many of them! Congratulations to Sophie Gittus finishing 2nd and 3rd in this class.

Please do support the Branch Equine Table Top Sale on Friday 18 March at Huntington Community Centre. A chance to have a good clear out or to pick up some bargains!!

Well Done to our Quiz Team of Nick Ireland, Jade Clayden, Ellie McNeil and Lara Simpson who took part in the first round of the Pony Club Quiz and finished 6th..

Five of our members did really well to qualify for the Area Round of the Dengie Show Jumping competition on Sunday – Nick Ireland, Sophie Morice, Serena Leighton, Holly Clayden and Amelia Brown. Particular congratulations to Holly and Serena who have both qualified for the National Finals – Holly in the 95cms class and Serena in 1.10m class.

Nine members obtained the Poisonous Plants Mini Achievement Badge – Phoebe Seymour, Sophie Gittus, Lily Hay, Gaby Simpson, Lara Simpson, Harry Davies-Savage, Olivia Piercey, Holly Middlemiss and Tiggy Gulliver – Well done to you all!

Area Teams – To be in any Area Team, members and horses/ponies must have attended a minimum of 3 working rallies since 1 July 2015 (Camp 2015 can count as one rally), including one in 2016. The trials for Show Jumping will be held at the event on 4 April and/or at the Branch competition on 2 May. The trials for Dressage will be held at the dressage rally on 23 April. If you are genuinely unable to attend either of these dates, but would still like to be considered for a team, please get in touch with Gill. Trials must be done on the horse/pony that would be in any competition should you be picked for a team place.Members must be regularly competing in the particular discipline at the correct height. The heights for Area Show Jumping are Junior 85/90cms, Novice 90/95cms, Intermediate 1.00/1.05m, Open 1.05/1.15m. Riders may not enter the Novice Show Jumping if they

have competed in BS competitions ABOVE 1.00m in the first round. The heights for Area Eventing are Novice/Helen Crockatt sj 95cms, xc 90cms, Intermediate sj1.05m, xc 1.00m, Open sj 1.15m, xc 1.10m. (i.e. BE 90, 100 and Novice). This does not apply to the many Branch Team Show Jumping competitions and Junior Series Show Jumping that take place throughout the year – these are open to anyone who would like to have a go and we would like to encourage as many of you as possible to take part. Everyone has to start somewhere!! The Area 3 Junior Show Jumping Series is running again this year and most Branch competitions include classes, with 3 heights of 60cms for 10 yrs and under, 70cms and 80cms for 12 years and under. The first 2 teams and 6 individuals from each height class will qualify for the final, which will be in the Autumn.

Any queries at all about all the above, please do get in touch with Gill – We would love as many of you as possible to have a go at something!

REMINDERS! 1) Anyone competing in Pony Club Eventing or Tetrathlon – Medical Armbands are compulsory for all heights of cross country. 2) Long sleeved shirts should be worn for all jumping activities. 3) Fixed Peak Hats no longer allowed for cross country 0.80m or above. 4) Hats must be Pony Club tagged to comply with insurance requirements. Hats with only the standard BSEN1384 are no longer allowed. 5)Membership cards do require the DC’s signature on the back of the card for anyone not holding their full ‘B’ Test wishing to wear Spurs. 6)Boots and stirrups with interlocking treads are not permitted. 7) Long hair must be secured in a hairnet or tied tightly back from the face, to avoid possible accidents! 8) No jewellery is allowed, other than a watch or stock pin, for mounted activities. January 2016

Riding and Road Safety – If anyone else wishes to take the BHS Riding and Road Safety Exam (a nationally recognised qualification) this Spring, please can you contact Gill before half term. This is essential for anyone wishing to take BHS stage exams and to continue with Pony Club efficiency tests.  You must be 12 years or above (as at 1/1/16). Numbers are limited, so priority is given to older members and those already holding their ‘C’ Test.

We have three members through to the Area round of the Dengie Winter League Show Jumping – Serena Leighton, Nick Ireland, Sophie Morice and hope we may have some success with members qualifying for the Area round of the Dengie Winter League Dressage on Saturday.

Anyone wishing to be considered for Area Teams in any discipline must have attended three mounted rallies (including Camp in 2015) and renewed their membership for 2016. Area competitions are qualifiers within each Pony Club Area for a place at the National Championships in August. (Not to be confused with various Branch competitions held throughout the year for which there are no qualification rules). You should be a regular competitor, particularly at Pony Club events (i.e. Branch show jumping etc) and be prepared to attend as much training as is offered.  Results at the level intended will be noted throughout the year, otherwise there is no way of knowing your ability!  Please don’t be shy about putting your name down to be considered – it is worth a try and, even if you are not quite ready, it is good experience for having a go in another year.  Heights: Eventing and SJ -Novice 90-95cms, Intermediate 1-1.05m, Open 1.10-1.15m. Dressage- Novice (BD prelim level), Intermediate (BD Novice level), Open (BD Elementary level). Any queries, please talk to Gill.

The Branch is intending to enter a team in the first round of the Quiz on 19 February, together with the Horse and Pony Care Competition to be held on Saturday 16th April – anyone interested in training for this, please let Gill know by 15 February. Teams of 3 with seniors 14 to 21yrs (one to be 16yrs and under),  and juniors 13yrs & under (one to be 11yrs & under).  This is a good opportunity to put your stable management training to good use!!

Welcome to New Members – Christian Robinson, Tiggy Gulliver, Jade Clayden, Holly Burn.

Hat Tags – Please can anyone who has not already done so, see Gill or Sue to have their hat tagged with the new white Pony Club tag.  This is to ensure the hat is to the required safety standard for insurance purposes.  The fit and condition of the hat are the responsibility of parents/guardians. The BSEN1384 standard is no longer considered to be to the right safety standard, so hats with that label are not allowed for any Pony Club event.

Branch Clothing: Anyone wishing to order Branch sweatshirts, polo shirts, saddlecloths etc, please contact Marie Snarr on 07528544344.
