August 2020

Dear Members,

Thank you to everyone who has been supporting YAS through these rather strange times. It has been good to see so many of you again and thank you for respecting the Pony Club Covid-19 ever-changing rules that are in place. I know it sometimes seems a bit restrictive, but it is something we have to do to try to ensure that there is not a return of the virus in this area and remain answerable to the Pony Club as an organisation. Numbers are limited to most events, but we will try to fit you in if at all possible.

If you are intending to come to any Branch events and haven’t already done so, please can you complete the attached Medical Form, which includes Covid-19 related information. You can either email it back to me or hand it over at the next event you attend. We will take all reasonable precautions to keep everyone safe and well in the current times, but it is most important that anyone showing any symptoms of Covid-19 or who has been in recent contact with anyone who has had it, does not attend anything. Social distancing remains in place at all times and only one person, probably as driver, should come with each rider, where possible. Please leave dogs at home or in your lorry – a number of venues do not allow them at present. Some venues do not have toilets open, so please come prepared just in case.

If you have had to replace your riding hat, please remember to ask for an up to date Pony Club tag. No fixed peaks for mounted games or cross country over 0.80m. Hairnets for all hair longer than collar length, no jewellery including all ear studs, stirrup irons not too tight on the foot and general tack stitching in good condition. Body protectors are only compulsory for cross country and racing, although recommended for other disciplines, particularly when riding young horses! They should fit correctly, be comfortable and must not restrict movement. In this very hot weather, jackets are not required and short sleeved shirts are allowed, as long as the shoulders are covered.

I have a few names down for the Riding and Road Safety – if anyone else is interested in doing the Pony Club Road Rider Test please give your name to Gill. This is for those 12 years and over, who have passed their C Test. It involves 2 dismounted @one hour sessions, a 2 hour mounted session and the test itself. We hope to start this in September/October.

Please ensure your pony/horse annual vaccination is up to date.

Welcome to new member: Harrison Vale. We hope you will have fun with YAS.

July 2020

Dear Members,

Thank you to everyone who has been supporting the north and south short rallies that have been running since lockdown has started to ease a bit. It has been good to catch up again and I do hope everyone has come through the last few months safe and well.

As you will know, Pony Club Head Office had to reach the sad decision that residential Camps could not take place this year, along with various other normal Pony Club summer activities, such as Area competitions and the National and Regional Championships. Mounted games are also rather limited. However, the Branch is going to hold non-residential Junior and Senior day Camps. There are also some non-qualifying Area competitions taking place later in the holidays.

If you are intending to come to any Branch events, please can you complete the attached Medical Form, which includes Covid-19 related information. You can either email it back to me or hand it over at the first event you attend. We will take all reasonable precautions to keep everyone safe and well in the current times, but it is most important that anyone showing any symptoms of Covid-19 or who has been in recent contact with anyone who has had it, does not attend any events. Social distancing remains in place at all times and only one person with each rider, where possible.

Welcome to new members: Hamish and Hugo Scott, Phoebe Craven, Emma-Louise Dib-Bennett. We hope you will enjoy your time with YAS.

FOR LOAN: Anna -12hh, 12yo Grey Mare. Ideal PC pony suitable for lead rein or second pony for competent rider. Been in present home for 3 and a half years and proven herself to be a good all rounder. Attended PC rallies, Mini and Senior Camp. Lovely to handle and good to catch, load – travelling in lorry or trailer – currently barefoot, lives in or out, great to hack out alone or in company and with busy traffic, children and dogs. Up to date with vacs and worming. Excels as a Games pony. Capable of jumping small courses – training might improve her anxiety with bigger heights. She has been known to do a small buck when asking for canter and sometimes after a jump, but never out hacking or during Games – hence why she isn’t necessarily suited as a first ridden pony. Forward going, but with brakes. 5* home essential for this genuine pony as we would like to have her back eventually for our younger children. Genuine enquiries only please. All potential homes will be vetted. Please call 07722 128184 for further details. (Currently kept at home near Harrogate.)

Dear All
I do hope everyone is keeping safe and well.
Thank you to all those of you who entered the Quarter Marker Stencil competition – the winners from each age group have now been sent on to Nicky Morrison, the Area 3 Rep, for her to judge an overall Area 3 winner.  Class 1 – 7yrs & under – Hamish Scott, Class 2 – 10yrs & under – Gabriella Marsh, Class 3 – 13yrs & under -Hannah Jones, plus a special award to Ella Frost.  Rosettes are on the way to you all.

I have details of another Area 3 competition,  – this time to do with Plaiting. This is being run by Katie Stephens-Grandy to coincide with Badminton, at which she should have been competing at the Grassroots Competition.  The rosettes and prizes are being provided by Smart Groom, who sponsor her and will be judging the entries.  Details as follows:
Class 1 – 11yrs & under – Have a go at plaiting the mane, you don’t have to do it all, but just have a go at two or three plaits and the forelock.
Class 2 – 12yrs & above – Plait your pony’s mane and forelock – no set number of plaits – you just decide what looks right for your pony and his confirmation.
Entry info: Either take up to three photos or do a short video to show your plaits and send them to Katie on What’s App Tel No: 07951 740998 or to her email  Katie@farmline.com  with the Class number – your name – age – PC Branch – Pony Name – Tel No – Address.  Entries close on 10 May at 8pm.  Results on 15 May.
Hints and Tips:  tutorial videos for each class on Katie Stephens Eventing Facebook page.
No Pony: If you can’t get to your pony or don’t have a pony, you can always plait a toy pony or even your mum or your sister’s hair!

I attach an update for the Write2Ride Competition, for which entries are flooding in from all over the country.  Do give it a go and note the update gives details of a prize for younger entries and a later closing date for those 16years and over, who may be overwhelmed with school work at the moment!

Take care.
Gill

March 2020

Dear Members,

This is not the Newsletter I was hoping to send out – the first one ready had lots of activities planned for March/April and into May, but events have overtaken us and everything is now cancelled.

Updates will be sent as soon as there is anything to report – hopefully sooner rather than later.

Thank you to all those of you who had already entered the Arena Eventing competition on 29th March and to all those who had very kindly offered sponsorship for it in the way of trophies, prizes and financial support. I hope we can reschedule it at some time later in the year, but in the meantime all cheques will be destroyed, cash will be refunded (I will contact those who paid by cash separately for their Bacs details) and Bacs payments will be returned.

I am hopeful, but obviously don’t know, that we may be able to still hold Camp (Monday 27 July to Friday 31 July) and Mini Camp (Mon 3/Tues 4/Wed 5 August), but am not sending any information out about either of these until things become clearer. Please keep the dates free if you are wanting to come though! Camp is residential, for those members 11 years and above who are able to muck out, feed and tack up their pony by themselves – help is there, but you should be able to do most things yourself! Mini-Camp is non-residential (though those attending are able to stay over if they wish to as a private arrangement) for members 11 years and under – therefore 11 year olds have a choice of which to attend.

In the meantime, we are going to put some online competitions on the website – hopefully some with an Easter theme! Do keep checking it (google York and Ainsty South Pony Club). There are also some photos from the Pony Club Winter Series Show Jumping Area Final.

YAS had a good day at the Winter Series Show Jumping Area Final last Sunday, with a number of qualifiers for the Championships on 4/5 April – now sadly cancelled. Lucy Jones won both the Debut and the Winter League Final, with Ellie McNeil and Harriet Needler also being placed and qualifying. In the Grand Prix Final, Katie Tasker won the class, with Ellie McNeil 2nd and 3rd and Holly Clayden 6th. Well done also to Sophia Elliott, Emily Jones, Hannah Jones and Loren Barnes, who jumped really well. Photographs on the YAS website.

The Branch had three competitors in the Winter Series Dressage Area Final and Saskia Brookes qualified for the Championships, also on 4/5 April.

Also cancelled is the Pony Club Winter Triathlon Championships, for which both Ella Frost and Zac Farnsworth had qualified. Well done to them and hope Tetrathlons are able to start again soon.

The Branch sent two Mini teams to the Area Horse and Pony Care competition – Emily O’Gram, Sophia Elliott, Amber Farnsworth and Zac Farnsworth, Lucinda O’Gram, Harvey Hunter – who did really well to come 3rd and 6th out of 14 teams. The shape of carrots seemed to cause a few issues! The Junior team of Charlotte Falkingham, Emily Jones, Anna Falkingham, also did well.

YAS still hold a big lead in both the Port Royal Pony Club Show Jumping and Dressage Points Series – well done to all who have taken part. Sadly, this too is on hold for the time being.

Welcome to new members – Abbie Mason and Emily Beadle. So sorry nothing much can happen at the moment.

For later in the year, the Branch has a Show Jumping competition booked in Escrick Park on 20 September and the annual Pleasure Ride booked on 18 October.

Hope everyone stays safe and healthy and that this will not go on for too long!

January 2020

Dear Members,

Welcome to the first Newsletter of 2020!

Thank you to all those of you who have already completed the membership renewal form and paid their SUBS for 2020. There is a form attached for those of you still to renew and just a reminder to those who have completed a form but are still to pay. The completed form can either be handed in at an event or sent to Suzanna Barker, Sutton Grange, Sutton on Forest, York YO61 1EN. (Any queries about this, please ring Suzanna (07790062851)). Membership and insurance cover will automatically stop on 31 January and no events can be attended until the renewal is made.
