HOW TO GET INVOLVED

We, the committee, instructors and members encourage everyone to have a go at representing our club and are here to help answer any questions you may have.  We hold rallies in various disciplines and are always open to trying new ones if people have an interest.  In order to be eligible to compete at any Area or National competition, please take note of the following requirements and expectations:

Three Rally Rule.

This rule applies to all Pony Club members of any Branch or Centre within Area 14 (Wessex and Channel Islands)

For Area competitions and above (this includes Grassroots and Regional competitions) Members must have actively taken part in a minimum of three rallies since the 1st July of the previous year to be eligible to represent their Branch at such competitions in all sports.  Horse/pony and rider combination must have attended one rally together.

The District Commissioner or Centre Proprietor, in conjunction with the Area Representative, has discretion in the case of those who are working or in further education to waive part of this rule.

Rallies must have been organised by the Branch/Centre, must be a minimum of an hour in length and must have been advertised in the Branch/Centre programme at least 7 days prior to the date of the rally.  All rallies must be open to all members within the age range or ability level for which it is intended.  The rally may be mounted or unmounted.  Nobody can organise a rally unless authorised by the District Commissioner/Centre Proprietor.

In addition all competitors must be active members of the Branch or Centre and must comply with their Branch or Centre Area Competition Team and Individual Selection Policy.  All members and their horses/ponies must comply with the relevant sports eligibility rules as per the rule books.

Three Rally Rule clarification for new horse/rider combinations

If the horse has done three pony club rallies (not necessarily with our branch, can be with another branch/centre but let DC know which one) and the rider has done their 3 rallies on another horse, we need to see the combination at least once, for eventing it must be a jumping rally.

Reference to what rallies count – as long as they are not team training, ie they are rallies open to everyone, then any rally is fine, it doesn’t have to be titled ‘general rally’. If you have any questions or you feel this excludes you then please message DC direct as this is in place for safety reasons and not there to exclude people from taking part.

Team Expectations for any discipline

  1. If selected for a team, members are expected to attend regular training rallies.
  2. Once a place on the squad has been offered and accepted you will be liable for payment for your place at the competition even if you are unable to attend or fail to fulfil the eligibility requirements.
  3. Members are responsible for ensuring that they are, and remain, eligible for the competition.
  4. Members are expected to attend the prize giving for their class at Area competitions and Championships.
  5. Teams and individuals will be warmed up by a team trainer and must attend the team course walks. XC course walks may be the day before the competition.
  6. If you are not available for the Championships and you or your team qualify you must let the team manager or DC know before prize giving as the qualification may need to be passed down.

Eventing

At the beginning of the year it is hard to know how you will perform in the three disciplines; Dressage, Show Jumping and Cross-Country, so it can be hard to say whether you want to be part of an Eventing team later in the season.

We will run specialist training sessions in each discipline and if you want to be considered for an Eventing team we recommend that you come to some of these specialist rallies.

Our chief instructor is Sarah Ward who has trained riders at the highest level.  Our Eventing instructors are Lauren Lillywhite and Alyssa Yallop, both 4* and 5* eventing riders.

In the summer we will also run training sessions for members of our teams competing in the Area competitions.

We also enter teams for inter-branch shows throughout the year which are open to any of our members keen to join in. Look on the website for details of opportunities to take part. And search on the calendar for one day events. These are a very good introduction to Eventing and will help you decide whether it is for you.

If you want to be considered for Craven teams for the Area competition we have certain expectations of you, and we make some commitments to you in return.

The Craven will provide training sessions with good instructors to give members the very best chance of gaining selection for a Craven team. We will be clear about the selection criteria for teams so that members know what they need to do to give themselves the best chance of selection.

You will gain competition experience and keep us informed of your performance. To be eligible for Area team selection at the end of June you need to have competed in at least 2 events at a standard appropriate to the team you are aiming for. And you must have attended at least 3 mounted rallies for all ages between 1st July 2023 and the date for preliminary entries for the 2024 Areas in June. Camp or Clinic count as one rally. Attendance at cross country rallies is highly recommended.

The very best of luck.

As the season progresses we will post results and reports on the News page.

Dressage

The Craven Hunt Pony Club won the 2019 Grassroots Competition fielding multiple teams who dedicated a lot of training time with Ali Surrey-Dane and as teams in their own time.

We offer a number of specialist dressage rallies which will help members improve their dressage. You might want to focus on dressage as part of a general improvement in your riding or you may have ambitions to qualify for the National Championships.

Ali Surrey-Dane is our Dressage instructor.

In the summer we will also run training sessions for members of our teams competing in the Area 14 competition.

To be eligible for Area team selection at the end of June you need to have competed in at least 3 events at a standard appropriate to the team you are aiming for. And you must have attended at least 3 mounted rallies for all ages between 1st July and the date for preliminary entries for Areas in June. Camp or Clinic count as one rally.

The very best of luck.

As the season progresses we will post results and reports on the News page.
