Team Selection Policy
Purpose
This policy explains how East Sussex Pony Club selects members to represent the Branch in competitions. It follows Pony Club Rule 7.7 and national guidance. Our aims are to ensure selection is fair, transparent, safe, and open to all eligible members.
Disciplines Covered
Including (but not limited to): Tetrathlon, Show Jumping, Eventing, Dressage, Triathlon, Polo, Musical Ride
Eligibility
Members must:
• be current East Sussex Pony Club members
• meet Pony Club eligibility rules for level entered
• be safe and competent at the level
• demonstrate commitment to the Branch
The District Commissioner (DC) confirms eligibility and readiness.
Demonstrating Commitment
This may include:
• rallies, camps, or training attendance
• team training participation
• volunteering or Branch support
• availability for competitions
• communication with Team Manager
Allowances are made for illness, exams, or justified absence.
Expression of Interest
Members should contact the relevant Team Manager at the start of the season or when competition-ready, and keep them updated with results and availability.
Selection Process
Teams are selected by a small committee, typically:
• District Commissioner
• Chief Instructor
• Team Manager
Selection considers safety, performance, combination suitability, commitment, and team balance.
Trials & Training
Where used:
• dates are advertised in advance
• all eligible members may attend
• qualified coaches are used
• parents attend for under-18s
Attendance may inform selection but is not the sole factor unless stated.
Selection Authority
Once provisionally selected, the Team Manager has final authority over:
• team composition
• rider/pony combinations
• roles or order
• substitutions or changes
• themes/positions (Musical Ride)
Changes after qualification may occur where rules allow. All decisions are final.
Conflict of Interest
Selectors with personal connections must withdraw. The DC appoints an impartial decision-maker. Decisions are final.
Impermissible Factors
Selection will not be influenced by favouritism, pressure, age (outside rules), personal relationships, or external coaching choices. Except in team-only sports (e.g., Polo), members may train with any coach.
Communication
Selections are communicated by the Team Manager. Members may request feedback. Committee discussions remain confidential.
Review
This policy is published and periodically reviewed by the Branch Committee.
