Dressage

Dressage is all about learning to work with your pony and help him achieve greater suppleness, flexibility and obedience; enhance his natural movements and ability and improve his athleticism.

You and your pony have to follow a set of instructions laid out in the dressage test. A judge marks the test. They give you a mark out of ten for how well you carry out each instruction. At the end of the test the marks are added up and the winner is the horse and rider with the highest score.

Dressage instruction is available at all our general rallies, as well as at standalone dressage rallies and team training.

Dressage competitions

The Pony Club holds the Barrier Spring Festival Dressage, with qualifiers (‘first round’ competitions) running through the Autumn up to the Regional competitions in early March. Individuals go through from the regional ‘second rounds’ to the National Championships in April.

Each Area also holds a summer dressage qualifier with the following levels of competition:

  • Preliminary PC70 (Regional Championships)
  • Grassroots PC80 (Regional Championships)
  • Novice
  • Open Novice
  • Intermediate
  • Open

The top teams and individuals at the Area Summer Qualifier will qualify for either the National Pony Club Championships (Novice, Open Novice, Intermediate, Open) or the Regional Pony Club Championships (PC70, PC80). Details of eligibility and qualification requirements can be found in the Pony Club Dressage Rulebook.

If you are interested in competing for the branch in dressage please contact the Branch’s dressage organiser and make sure you’re attending dressage rallies and training.
