Horse Trials

Eventing (or Horse Trials) originally evolved from the training and selection of cavalry horses.

Each of the three disciplines is designed to test the horses ability.
Dressage shows how trainable the horse is and its basic paces in walk, trot and canter.
The Show Jumping shows athleticism, control and accuracy.
The Cross Country tests stamina, speed, jumping and bravery. The sport is rather like the pentathlon in that it combines different disciplines in one competition and is run on a cumulative penalty basis. The competitor with least penalties at the end is the winner.

GATCOMBE Arena Eventing Schedule

Pony Club members are invited to Barbury International Horse Trials to see behind the scenes at a major international event. The preparation of an eventer for a world class competition is pain-staking and requires dedication, expertise, determination and plenty of hard work. However, there’s nothing like the feeling of winning a top trophy and achieving the recognition of your peers. Eventing is both great fun and hugely satisfying, and you’re part of a great and enthusiastic community.
Nearly 1,000 horses compete at Barbury each year, so join us at the winner’s podium for 11am on Saturday July 8th for a unique tour behind the scenes. You’ll see in the stable area, walk part of the course with a current rider, see a live farriery demonstration and understand the importance of feed within the training regime of a top flight sport horse. There’s no charge for the tour, and Pony Club members and their parents can use voucher code PCBarbury to buy admission at £5 off the prevailing advance price. That means admission for 12-18 year olds for just £3, adults at £10! Pre-paid admission closes on July 6th. Under 12s accompanied by an adult are admitted free. Visit and book now.

Congratulations to everyone who came to Shipton Moyne yesterday, we had a absolutely brilliant day, everyone came off the course with a huge smile.

We had two teams in the 75cms;
Erin Day, Amy and Phobe Gillingham, Libby Hemmings , who were the Black-berrries
Charlotte Sheppard, Megan Snow, Ellie Coleman, Hattie Pullin, who were the Blue-berries
We also had;
Holly Griffith and Marney Charles in the 85cms
Okay, now the results;
In the 75cms section A;
Amy Gillingham came 2nd, Megan Snow came 4th and Erin Day unfortunealy just missed out on 10th place, which was such a shame as she had done so brilliantly with her new youngster.
In the 75cm section B;
Libby Hemmings and Hattie Pullin came join 5th, Phobe Gillingham came 8th, Ellie Coleman came 9th and also picked up the best dressage score.
This meant that team Black-berries won !!!!! and team Blue-berries came 3rd!!!!!
Which was amazing out of 14 teams
As for the 85cms, the girls carried on getting placed;
Holly Griffith came 3rd and Marney Charles came 6th in their section.
So a Fantastic day all round. Thank you to Mike for all his help.

The next team event is 23rd April, Cotswold Hunt Junior and Mini ODE at Andoversford, entries close on sat.

Thanks Kim
Dear All,

Exciting news we have managed to pull together a Pony Club / BE League table with the huge help of Jane Ogle whom has written the entry forms and will collate results. This is just for Area 9 but I really think it should work on a National Level. I need you all to try your best to circulate the news particularly to those members wavering on whether thy might re join because they now go BE . We need to prove that you can successfully be a pony club member and go BE.

How it works . Every member going BE to pay £10 for the first horse and £5 for any others for the whole season. Members will be responsible for emailing Jane with results within 7 days of the competition. Please look at the attachment to see how to gain points. Those BE Members placing at the Areas at Dauntsey will gain double points to encourage participation.

Free lessons at their yards pledged for the top 3 winners from

80cms Kitty King
90cms Tom McEwen
100cms Charlotte Agnew
Novice Jonty Evans
Int 1* 2* Harry Meade
Overall winner 17 and over lesson with Nick Gauntlett .

The winner of each section to have a coat and the runner up a headcollar. If we get a sponsor we will have more prizes to give out at an awards evening next winter. Please advertise and put on your branch websites. You might even encourage new members !! Aim to encourage all members going BE to register with Jane.

Best wishes

Congratulations to Clara who was 11th in her section at the National Intermediate Eventing Championships 2015
Many Congratulations to Clara Wood who won her section at Area Intermediate Eventing and has qualified for The National Championships 2015.

If you would like to go to Area Horse Trials this year you must do at least two horse trials before the Area date, I will try and keep you informed of pony club horse trials, there are plenty in the area.  Riding Diary is also a good way of finding out about events that are going on.  If you need any help or advice please don’t hesitate to contact me.  For a number of years now the branch has paid the entry fee for area events, last year the entry fee for horse trials was nearly a £1000, I’m afraid the branch can’t afford this kind of entry fee.  When we find out what the entry fee is this year we will be asking you for help towards it.  Good luck with your season ahead and please keep me informed of how you are doing.
