 Good time at Newmarket

Janice Payne organised a fantastic trip to Newmarket on Thursday April 16th.  We set off at 6am and arrived in Newmarket at 8.30am to set off immediately on a bus trip around the gallops, including ‘The Heath’ with ex jockey Frank Conlon, who had worked for Sir Henry Cecil for 31 years.  He told us about how the horses are ridden out, and which gallops they use at different stages of their training.   He pointed out all the local studs and racing yards along the way, plus the beautiful houses and told us who owned and ran them. Then we headed back to the British Racing School for a tour.  This is where apprentice jockeys go for courses, which last from 4 weeks to 3 months.  We were shown around the stables, where ex racehorses are used to teach the apprentices.  After seeing their accommodation, and common room, we were introduced to Steve Smith Eccles, who was a jump jockey for many years, and he took us to the gym, where he gave the members a lesson on how to roll correctly when falling.  This graduated from rolling on a mat, to using a ball, to running up and jumping onto a large mat.  Once Steve was happy with their technique, the rookie ‘jockeys’ made their way outside to the mechanical horse.  This is quite scary!  A large black 17hh horse with no ears (!) awaited the brave to mount, and then be shot forward and tipped up unceremoniously, onto mats.  After much laughter, Steve assessed how they had done!  It was decided, after two falls each, that a few more lessons will be required to perfect this dismount! We were given lunch, and after a break, we headed to the National Stud on the other side of Newmarket in our minibus.  This is an immaculate beautiful stud, where the top Stallions, Mares and foals in the country live.  The sun shone, and the blossom was out, as we walked around looking at the new arrivals.  We were shown the Stallion block, where the Mares are covered, and the equipment used, and then shown three Stallions.  We learnt a lot about the history of Newmarket, how the stud was built and some graves of famous past Stallions. After a visit to the tea shop, we headed back to Sevenoaks, tired but happy.  It was a fabulous day and our thanks go to Janice for arranging it all.   newmarket1 newmarket2 newmarket3 newmarket4 newmarket5 newmarket6

Bedgebury Training day

Senior Easter Training Day Bedgebury Easter Training - Four ready for dressage Lunchtime Mark Teaching Anna Hilton improving show jumping technique

Senior Traiing Day at Bedgebury  On Thursday 9 April, 12 WKS members congregated at Bedgebury for an intensive and fun day of training.  The morning was devoted to flat work with Mark Butler and Andy Ford and stable management aimed at B Test level, with Emma Sollis and Anne Mills followed.  Members, parents and organisers enjoyed a light lunch in the marquee, and the afternoon was taken up with show jumping with Anna Hilton and Andy Ford.  Groups were kept to 2 or 3, to ensure everyone gained as much as they could from the sessions. The weather was perfect, and everyone had a great day enjoying their riding and meeting all their Pony Club friends.
