National Quiz Final

Gorswen Centre, Holyhead on Anglesey won the Area 5 Quiz qualifier (they beat the Branches too !) and went forward to the National Quiz Final held April 24th.  The team was Niamh,  Lauren Hodgson, Skye and Lili.

After the first round they were lying first, then slipped to 8th! They almost lost hope as they didn’t think they would come back from that but then the team achieved full marks in their Pairs sections which pulled them up. The team was delighted to do so well in such a high class competition.  They came 3rd —  only being 3.5 points behind the winners.

The Centre is to be congratulated on this result and well done to Ruth Owen (BHS reg)  who runs the Centre and to Lauren Hodgson (Captain) for training the Team.  The Centre has 21 members.

WELL DONE and GOOD LUCK

The AREA 5 QUIZ was hosted by Cheshire Hunt North Branch on Saturday. March 6th. It took place online with the help of Bramham Moor Branch and thank you to Joan Deakin and her team for all their hard work.

Well done to those Branches who raised Teams to compete and support this competition. It is as much work to put it on for 6 teams as it is for 20 !

RESULTS can be found on the main PC website ( Ponyclubresults.co.uk ) but the winning Branches were ChHNorth AND Sir WWW who could not be separated – even after a tie break round ! Scoring 57/70 each.
Gwynedd Branch did well and came 3rd.

  • ChHNorth members were: Bella Craggs, Daisy Caldwell, Ellie Thomas and Hannah Pedley.
  • Sir WWW members were: Hope Hancock, Jemima Young, Lucy Fox and Scarlett Gilruth.
Congratulations to those teams.

VERY WELL DONE …

WWW (left in photo) – Pip Young, Kate Rutherford, Lucy Fox and Scarlett Gilruth.  Three of this team have attended Area 5 online training so perhaps that helped a little.  The Gorswen team (right in photo) was Lauren, Branwen, Niamh and Skye pictured round the table on the night.

Centre Wins Top spot at the Area 5 Quiz

Aberconwy hosted the Area 5 Quiz on March 17th in Eglwysbach village hall.  It was a very exciting afternoon as the points were so close.  Running totals were given out after every few rounds which added to the atmosphere.  Thank you to Aberconwy Committee and to the scorers who produced the final results very quickly inspite  of having to do a recount because the points were so close.

Horse and Pony Care – FULL RESULTS

We had a lovely day hosted by the Burton Cheshire Forest Branch of the Pony Club at Dee Farm on the Wirral and run by John Gilbert very efficiently with humour and enthusiasm. We had free drinks and cake all afternoon and during that nerve wracking time while waiting for our results we had a superb dressage to music demonstration from Helen Dutton, not on her big dressage horse but on a lovely Welsh cob that had been bought at Beeston! It would be wonderful if we could all turn a sow’s ear into a silk purse!

Both senior and junior competitions were won by the Berwyn and Dee Pony Club which has only 37 members most of whom are in the youngest age group. The senior team of Lily Wakefield, Lauren Lawley and Sian Williams who have two D+ tests and a C between them did well to answer questions at B test standard. The junior team “The Happy Gang” of Sian Evans, Emily Martin Jones and Aimee Davies were thrilled to win against stiff opposition. Well done Berwyn and Dee Pony Club and Good Luck at the Champs.

Second Placed team was Dwyfor – another very small Branch,  Cheshire Hunt North Tigers took 3rd, 4th (Lions) and 5th (Leopards) places and WWW were 6th. Well done all for taking part.

Huge Congratulations to Berwyn and Dee Branch for winning the Junior class at the Horse and Pony care competition on Sunday at Dee Farm, Heswall.

They will be joining their Senior team who are off to the Champs too!

Good Luck to them!

Well done to their trainer Mary Evans and a big Thank you to John for organising a well run competition!

Thanks … Meg Green – Area 5 Representative

2017 NFU Mutual National Quiz Final Winners …

… Cheshire Hunt North

After winning the Area 5 qualifier at Eirias Park on the 19th March the Cheshire Hunt North Quiz team had just under two weeks to prepare for the Quiz Final.

A total of 29 teams from all over the country competed at Addington Manor on the 2nd April with 18 Branches and 11 Centres taking part in the Quiz Final.

The quiz consisted of 9 rounds of topics;

  • The Pony Club and Ex Pony Club Equestrian Celebrities
  • Non Equine Achievement Badges
  • Competitive Sports and Competitions within the Pony Club
  • The Spanish Riding School
  • Keeping A Pony at Grass (Junior pairs)
  • Worming and Paddock Maintenance (Senior Pairs)
  • The individual practical round was ‘The Tack Room’
  • The Picture round was titled ‘What is this?’
  • Equestrian Sports at the Olympic Games
  • The Music Round.

After a short briefing the quiz got under way and then after the first four rounds the teams had a break for lunch. After lunch the teams were spilt with the seniors heading off to do their individual practical round leaving the junior pair to answer their questions on “Keeping A Pony at Grass”. The pairs swapped over with the juniors doing their individual practical round and the seniors their pairs round on “Worming and Paddock Maintenance”.

After a short break, the results were up and the girls from CHN were absolutely delighted to win. It was the first time at the finals for youngest members, it was Hannah’s third year in a row at the finals and for Georgina it was the second time she had won the Quiz Final.

An enormous ‘Thank you’ to Anna Sherry and Sarah Hodgson who give up their time to coach the quiz teams.
