TWO TETRATHLONS

On August 7/8th and August 13/14/15th two major Tetrathlons Championships took place.

The first was the Senior Regional Championship which took place in Melton Mowbray.  For this competition, the best in the various regions are invited to be in Regional Teams and compete against one another.  So, although competitor numbers are relatively low, the quality is high as they are the cream of their particular region.  The XC was full of questions but the bogey fence was the skinny in the water and was very influential.

Wales and the Borders did particularly well as both the Girls and the Boys Welsh teams came 3rd out of 10 regional teams. Unfortunately, Ireland could not be with us this year because of Coronavirus.

The Boys team was –

  •  Morgan Thompson (LLangeinor)
  • Jack and Kitt Stevens (Brecon)
  • Rhys Smart and Morgan Edwards

Jack Stevens from Brecon was overall Senior Champion with an amazing and rare 1000 in the one-handed, 10m shoot.  A Welsh Champion.   MorganThompson was 5th.

The Wales and Borders Girls team was –

  • Beatrice Taylor (Cheshire Hunt South)
  • Ella Booth (Cheshire Hunt North)
  • Annabel James (East Cheshire)
  • Anniken Stythe (East Cheshire)
  • Megan Jones.

The second Competition was the National Championship which took place at Offchurch Bury.  This is the first year that Tetrathlon has been held at the same venue/time as the main Championship and the atmosphere was quite special.  This Tetrathlon Championship is when Branch teams compete against one another but the 19 Areas are invited to enter teams as well into a separate Area competition.

The only Branch Team Area 5 had was Cheshire Hunt South Junior Team who did very well to come 6th with a team of Thomas Johnson, Abigael Mulcaster and Polly Johnson.  Thomas also shot 1000 (2 hands, 7 m).  Great shooting.

Area 5 were well represented at this competition for which they had to qualify from the Area competition in June.  Members were from ChHS, ChHN, E.Ch., FnD and Tanatside.

There were 29 Area teams in all – Area 5 had 3 forward. The “Oaks” team (Beatrice and Harry Taylor, Lana Booth and Freddie James) came 5th. It was extremely close – their final score was 12832 – only 81 points behind the winning team.  Every second on the run and every metre in the swim was fought for.  Individually, LANA BOOTH (CHN) won the Junior class with a 980 shoot and a clear XC –  so is the Junior Champion. This was by far the biggest Class of the day with 88 competitors.

The Area 5 “Beech” team (Annabel James (E.Ch), Rufus Taylor (CHS), Oliver Loud (WWW) and Leah Lamb (FnD) came a respectable 10th. Individually, Rufus came 5th in the Intermediate boys with an amazing 9.9 swim. Oliver Loud (WWW) came 7th in the Junior boys competing in his first big competition.  Leah Lamb (FnD) did well in the Junior Girls going clear on the biggest course she had ever done in her life !

The Grassroots is a mixed age/gender class for which you don’t need to qualify. It is there to encourage youngsters or beginners.  Archie Evans from Tanatside competed in the Grassroots as did Lochie and Finton White (E.Ch).  Well done to Sophie Mulcaster(CHS) who came 2nd.  This class did not go XC but did a small course of Sjumps instead.

The XC course at this venue caused huge problems for the Seniors – there were a number of falls,  stops and riders walking home in the first half hour but things improved as the day progressed.

Apologies for not mentioning everyone and for any factual mistakes!

NOTE – Area 5 Tet Committee is holding a Triathlon in Mold Sunday Oct 31st.

Lana Booth (Cheshire Hunt North) wins Junior International Tetrathlon competition!

Four competitors from Area 5 were invited to represent Wales and Borders at the Junior International Tetrathlon competition, which was held at Moreton Morrell College, Warwickshire, on June 5th and 6th 2021.

Throughout the lockdown Lana Booth (Cheshire Hunt North), has trained intensely and it certainly paid off! Lana, our Wales and Borders Girls Captain, came in 1st place out of a whopping class of 69 Junior Girls! She did fantastically well coming in 2nd place in the shoot (940 out of 1000), joint 3rd in the run, and 2nd in the swim. She topped this off with a clear ride! Well done Lana!!

It was Leah Lamb’s (Flint and Denbigh Hunt) first time competing at this level and she did so well, with a particularly good shoot (860).

Our two Junior Boys both had a fantastic weekend, with both placing in the top 10, out of 27 boys! Freddie James (East Cheshire) came in 5th place overall with an impressive shoot (900) and the 4th best swim in his class.

Harry Taylor (Cheshire Hunt South) was close behind in 8th place. Harry was one of only 8 boys to ride clear over a very technical cross-country course.

This year there was also an additional class for the 15 year olds who had unfortunately as a result of COVID, missed last years competition. Area 5 had 3 competitors eligible to take part.

Beatrice Taylor (Cheshire Hunt South) did brilliantly, coming in 2nd place out of the 16 girls, and achieving the best swim. She was only 91 points behind first place!

Archie Peffers (Waen-y-Llyn) had a great run (coming in 4th place) and swim (6th place). Our final competitor, Rufus Taylor (Cheshire Hunt South) had a superb swim, achieving 8th place overall.

Well done Area 5 competitors! You all did so well.

Junior Regional Tetrathlon Championships

This is a team competition between the four nations and was held in beautiful weather in Moreton Morrell College.  The Welsh had a team of 5 girls and a team of 5 boys selected from all over Wales.  Area 5 was well represented by B Leah Lamb (Flint & Denbigh) and Lana Booth (Ch H North)in the girls team and Harry Taylor(Ch H South) and Freddie James (East Ch) for the boys.

The XC was up to height, unforgiving and really tested the rider rather than the horse.  All competitors did extremely well in such good company.  The Welsh Girls’ Team came 2nd and Lana Booth won Individually with a great shoot of 940 and clear XC.  Freddie James competing in his first big competition came fifth with a shoot of 900 and 1362 XC. Harry taylor was 8th.  Leah lamb doing her first big competition ever, swam exceptionally well and tackled the XC with her sual focus scoring a creditable 1000 points.

Well done All.

Mostyn Dri Tri report

There were some outstanding achievements at the Dry Tri in Mostyn on a beautiful Sept 19th.

There were 5 teams of 4 competing and 3 were FnDenbigh who came 1st, 2nd and 4th. The youngest competitor -ever – was Eos Newton age 3 !!

The winning Team was Nathan Cooper (!st Junior Boy) with a score of 2575, Leah Lamb(3rd Mini Girl) with top run, Neisha Roberts (1st Jun Girl) who had top run and =top shoot of 920, Neisha also had the too score of the competition with 3293 points, and Constance Wight (4th Mini Girl) with = top shoot of 920.

The XC was quite testing, fence No 2 being the bogey fence.  There were only 3 clears on the day and Neisha Roberts was one of them.

Other scores worth mentioning – Helen Jones had topshoot in her class, Orla Kissane had top run and Lili Evans was 2nd Mini Girl with an = top shoot of 920 with Neisha and Constance.

Well Done All.

Annabel’s Story – National Tetrathlon 2019 Champs

Annabel James (East Cheshire) won the Intermediate Girls competition at the National Tetrathlon Championships. This is Annabel’s story…

On Thursday night we left for the Pony Club Tetrathlon Championships. Once we had got the horses settled in, we made plans for the busy day of shooting and swimming, everyone was very excited. I wasn’t shooting until 2pm on Friday afternoon, leaving what seemed like a very long morning as I was quite nervous, but it also meant I had time to ride Cloudy and get organised in plenty of time. It felt rather strange starting the competition so late, as usually the older competitors are on first.

My Windsor Experience – Beatrice Taylor

The following write up is from Beatrice Taylor, our Area 5 representative for the Wales and Borders tetrathlon team at the Windsor Horse Show!

After receiving the exciting news that I had been selected to represent Area 5 at the Royal Windsor Horse Show, we were finally heading down to London. My brother, Rufus, was also competing at Windsor, in the NSEA Show Jumping with Lola, so it was going to be a busy weekend.  It took 6 ½ hrs to get there and we’d been told all the lorries were being towed on and off Windsor Park due to torrential rain. We stabled overnight offsite at Cowarth Park, with lots of grumpy polo ponies. My great friend, Kiera Booth, came with us and helped with the ponies, she helped calmed me down too and was a good friend to share the experience with. Dad finally groaned at me to go for a run around the polo pitches; I had too much energy! Continue reading My Windsor Experience – Beatrice Taylor
