Safety Equipment

Riding hats must be worn at all times whilst riding or lunging ponies and it is recommended that they should be worn for activities such as loading or leading. Only riding hats which conform to the current safety standards can be worn, hats will be checked at rallies and camps and only hats that are pink tagged will be allowed to be worn. New hats can be tagged by committee members at rallies or events as long as they conform to appropriate standards.

In Berkeley South we stipulate that body protectors which conform to current standards (blue label, 2018 standard) must be worn during any jumping activity – show jumping, grids, or cross country. This is to protect our members. Body protectors must also be worn for Pony Racing.

We do not permit long coats, such as Equidry or Equicoat, to be worn when mounted. If coats have a hood this should be capable of being tucked away to avoid being caught in the event of a fall. Similarly hoodies may not be worn when mounted.

Spurs and Whips

At Berkeley South we take equine welfare seriously and teach our members to use aids with this in mind. Spurs may only be worn by members who have passed their C+ test, or who have successfully passed their Spurs Test. A report card system is in operation across Pony Club to ensure that there is no improper use of spurs after passing the test.

Whips must be padded baton whips for all jumping activities and we would ask members to consider using the same for flatwork, however schooling whips are permitted on the flat if necessary. No whips can be used in Pony Racing.
